clutch problem?
 
Well my 1980 3.6 targa is BROKEN! arrrrg. Can anyone help me figure this out?

I just got my 7s and 8s on the car so now she hooks up alot better in first gear vs my old 6s and 7s. Sooo, I was enjoying my new found acceleration when at about 4K rpm in first gear I hear a noise and the motor bounces of the limiter instantly.

I thought wow that was fast and pushed in teh clutch, shifter into 2nd, let out the clutch only to har the motor race!. I can hear teh linkage work to select a gear and have verifyied that the clutch cable isnt broken ( ie the clutch linkage moves at the transmission). Motor runs fine. Axles seem in place. I can move the shifter thru all teh gears, including reverse. IF I put it in gear, and let out the clutch the car doesnt move but I can hear a rattlign type noise.

Is there something wrong with the clutch or the trans? If say, the trown out arm or bearing is broken, what are the symtoms?

Any help or advise is appreciated.

Sounds like a CV joint, look at the trans output for dangling half shaft.

Either that or the center hub of the disc is gone. The SC's had an original rubber spring type center instead of steel springs and should have been replaced after about 25k. I pulled mine apart at 60k for an oil leak and there was the old style disc with the rubber pieces in pieces. The oil pressure switch leaked down onto the clutch so it was toast either way.

Not only a broken CV joint but I’ll speculate you have the 100 mm CVs. The 100 mm CVs have a 923 part number – from a 912E. What do you think; 3.6, big rubber, not strong enough CV joint?

If this the problem and you have the 100 mm CVs, up-rate to the Turbo half shafts (928 part number) that are 108 mm and MUCH stronger.

lol you guys are funny... rubber centered clutch....it has a sachs power clutch in it. both shafts are NEW, well 500 miles old, freshly replaced with with 3.6 transplant. Both axles are still conected to hubs/trans.

OK, OK here we are whistling in the dark.

Put it up on a rack where it is still on its wheels. Fire it up, put it in gear and look underneath.

Is there an axle flange turning but the wheel is stationary? Check both sides.

Can you better isolate the noise – clutch, transmission, CV, other?

If still no determination, drain the transmission and remove the shift plate for inspection. Be sure and screen the transmission lubricant for any parts.

GC,

Well I gotta be honest, it is dead on the side of the road about 3 blocks from my place. When I was pulling away from my mechanics shop one day I stepped on it and sheared off some of those very bolts on the new axles. We pushed it back, with the axle clunking around as it wasn't attached to the trans and he fixed it. Have not had a problem since. the symptoms of the new problem are the same. I think I understand your diagnosis. I need to look at the flanges on the trans and see if they move without the CV moving. Can I jack the whole back of the car off the ground and turn one wheel and see if it moves the other? It should move in one direction or the other depending on the type of diff...? I will say I looked when it happened and it seemed fine.

I will go look at it tomorrow, as I have the day off! I don't understand how the axles can still be "in place" but as the symptoms are the same or similar...
