What to do? Dilemma...

Hey, I own a '73 porsche 911T and I've the following dilemma...

The car is 100% original but it needs a repaint.

The color is 8888, gold but I don't really like this color. What to do?

Respray the car in another color or respaint it in the original color?

How would this affect the value of my car???

Thanks in advance!

John

If its an original car then it will lower the resale if sprayed another color. Personally I run away from cars that are not original colors, everywhere you look there will be remnants of the original color.

You are going to hear it over and over, keep it in the original paint. But, If you think you are going to hold on to it for a looong time, I would paint it a correct color that you like for that year. You have to look at it every day and it will bother you in the long run. If you do repaint it, do it right - windows out, inside trunk, etc.

Strip to bare shell. Paint whatever color you desire. Assemble, and drive for many years with a smile.
Cars depreciate.... you want $ go buy a apartment bldg.

Color changes can be very detrimental to a collector car. No one cares if you change the color of an 84 nissan. ....

If you can pull the entire car apart and are able to get all the sills, engine compartment, trunk, etc., then it isnt as bad to the value but you will still have the color plate that will point out the car used to be another color....

So if you dont mind losing value to have it your favorite color, then go for it.....if you want to keep your investmet intact, then spend the money for a quality paint job and keep it the original color......

My 2 cents
Chris

To do a color change properly will cost some money. If the car is not worth it to you to put that amount of money into it, then maybe you'll want to sell it. On the other hand, there are some pretty ugly shades of gold out there (sorry, I don't know what color yours is). There are some colors out there that will be 'sale proof' no matter how original. I had a gold car once, the color grew on me but I always wished it were something else.

Thanks guys for all your answers; very helpfull, but I haven't decided yet.
Thsi question was about the paintjob, but it raises the question for all other upgrades: SSI, carrera chain tensioners, bigger torsionbars and sway-bars, etc... on pre-73 cars

What to go for? Orginality or comfort?

What's worth most in $$$?

Do you own the car because it is an investment or because it is a blast to drive? Which is most important to you - getting the most money back when you sell it down the road? Then the car is an investment and you should not drive it a lot for fear of getting hit and destroying your investment. OR is it to enjoy each time you look at it and go for a drive? If it's the latter, then paint it a color you like and just figure that every time you enjoy looking at it and driving it has cost you a dollar. Gary

You bought the Porsche with your heart I suppose, like a lot of us did. Not as an investment. We love our cars not least for the looks so why carry on with a color you don´t like ? Because it might fetch a little less in the future if you eventually sell it ?

Mind you I am all for original/stock but you have to feel good about it.

Just my 0.002 Swedish crowns..

Are you just taking care of the car for the next owner, or is it *your* car to drive the snot out of? I suppose there is something to be said for keeping your car as nice and stock as possible, fussing over the details, and worrying about every scratch and rock chip. But that doesn't seem fun to me. I personally don't care what the resale value of my car is...if I did, I wouldn't enjoy it as much. But I only have an SC

To do a paint job"right" there is no other way then paint the whole thing. That means take doors off and apart, glass out, front hood off and all out of the front so all can be painted, engine and tranny out, the car is small and this job is not all that hard if your willing to put up with a few mistakes and redos....How else do we learn, pay some one? I dont think so. Besides like said, its your car not so and so s.-Please, Ill have the car my way thankyou!

You should look into it further to see if 8888 was the "paint to sample" code for 1973.

This is what's wrong with it (see pic)

(if the color was the same as your car, Ryan, I would be totally happy).

From some of the replies it looks if the only thing I'm interested in is the money, well that's not the case. I do apriciate a good investment, but I apriciate even more a nice, original classic and if I've to update some stuff to make it safer or reliabler or faster I won't hesitate to make these updates.

Thanks for the massive feedback!

John

john,
my car was repainted in '98 in a slightly lighter shade..i'm almost certain your pic is my true original color..just a little darker, but i've become quite fond of gold over the years. i think it's a beautiful color, john! very rich looking..nice to see another gold car, they're rare to find.

http://www.elferhelfer.com/farben/farben72-73.htm

Looks like gold metallic, which was 8888 in '71, or color chart no 133 in '71, but in '73 the color chart no. is 144.

That definitely looks like a 73 if that's your car in the picture, so ???? What other codes are on the paint tag on the a-pillar?

i keep going back and looking at the pic, john..i really do love the color..you just don't see that many in this shade and i think that's a huge plus. if it's original i hope you don't change it.

My '73 was some ugly goldish color and -- luckily -- has a custom color code plate on it. A PO painted it red and it took me 3 years to discover what the original color was. It will soon be Gemini Blue. I intend to sell it for a profit AFTER I am forced into a nursing home. It will then still have the custom color plate on it...

Nice car. Kind of reminds me of my Dad's old '69 911.

Here's my opinion. If you want to keep the classic look but don't like the current color, find an original color for that year that you really like. Then do a bare metal respray with it.
