Here's one for the "dumb-dumb" thread
Not sure where that thread is where everyone admits to stupid things they've done but here's mine...
This thread could also be called "Another reason to replace your hood shocks" Was leaving the beach today and I got a towel out from the bonnet, fully expecting to put in back after I had dried off. My shocks are toast so I just rested the hood back done until I was finished with the towel. I forgot about the hood and just tossed the towel on the seat and drove off. At about 30 km/h my hood flies up!! Jam on the breaks and pull over. the top corners of the hood dug into the cowling (where the wipers attach) leaving two nice dents. No real damage to the hood at all except a slight bent in the top rigth corner, easily bent back I think. Thank god I wasn't driving faster. My autobody guy said he's seen cases where the hood flew up, bent back, smashed the windshield, damaged the roof, not to mention ruining the hood! Oh well, "Doh!" Nik

I checked my oil the other day and set the cap on the right side motor mount. On my way to work the temperature needle started going intermittently haywire, pegging itself when I'd get on the brakes or at idle. When I got to work I opened the lid to see if there was a wiring issue and noticed the cap leaning against the sender.

Some years ago a bunch of friends and I were on our way to a St. Patrick's Day parade with a red '68 Checker Aerobus (an old stretch limo from the people who made the Checker cabs) and the hood flew up and snapped completely off at the hinges! We pondered for a minute, put the retrieved hood in the back seat and went "topless" to the parade.

I did some work on my door pockets and placed one of them on the rear bumper of my car so it could be in the sun in my garage.A few hours later I decided to take the P car out for a spirited ride. I had a great ride and returned home. A few hours later I got that sick feeling you get when you have done something stupid, I retraced my path and found my door pocket in the middle of an intersection, and it was much flatter then I remembered !!

About ten years ago, I went for an interview to teach at my old high school. When I went to leave, I set my briefcase on the roof of my 325is while I took of my jacket. Next time I saw it it was skidding through an intersection after a spirited run done the road I grew up on!! When they called to offer me the job, they asked how far I got before I lost my briefcase!! The job turned out to really suck, but I still keep that battered briefcase in my home office just for laughs.

My brother was working on his pickup and was enjoying a beer. Time to test drive it so he set down his half full beer before driving. Few minutes later at an intersection, in cop city, some guy behind him was honking and waving. My bro finally asks what he wants and the guy behind him said, "dude, you left your beer on your back bumper!"
