Wow! So many Porsches

I just arrived today in Newport Beach on vacation from Chicago and I can't believe how many Porsches there are in Southern California.

My wife and I went out for a drive on Pacific Coast Highway and I think we saw a Boxster or >98 911 every 60 seconds or less. Only three were <=1989.

So many nice Porsches there must be some great events. Is there anything going on around the end of July. Would love to attend if I could make it.

For those of you that live here, how lucky you are to have a used car market that must be awesome.

i was in newport beach at the start of the year, went over to the states with my gf, she wanted to see "The OC" and i grudgingly went along with her but when i got there!!!! porsches everywhere! and just as i was saying to her how amazing how many porsches there are as we pulled up at a set of lights and what do i see at the other end of the intersection...... a red carrera GT sitting there shining away!!!! those things sound amazing! so i fumbled for my camera and went to take a shot..... freaking camera was stuck on the photo viewer mode(stupid digital cameras) and i was franticly clicking the button wondering why the hell it wasnt taking any fotos before i realised my mistake the guy took off at the lights and i missed the shot!!! grrrrr but still i saw it in the flesh, was a beautiful sight!(and sound!!!)
so yeah newport beach...... awesome!

Hi AussieDrew, hell of a way for you to come from Melbourne. Funny you mention a CGT, when we went out for dinner tonight we end up following a Ferrari with the windows down. I love my 84 911 Cab, but what a sweet sound we listen to as we head north past Huntington Beach. You gotta love it here.

Yup. Lot of them over here, especially near the coast.

On a related note, I've been ignored by so many 996 drivers when I've waved to them in the past that I've just stopped initiating waves to them. Funny thing happened to me the other day, however. I saw a nice black 996 Cab coming the other way on a fairly slow road, and when he got close to me he waved at me first. I was shocked but quickly waved back before he might think I was some classic 911 snob...

So I guess at least some 996 drivers are aware of the 911 "brotherhood"

If I remember correctly there are more Porsches sold in California than anywhere else in the U.S combined!

Somewhere I read that half of the cars that Porsche makes come to the US and half of those live in Kalifornia.

Cool, hope you are having fun!

Your room is probably 200 yards from my parent's house. They are in the houses on the bluff right next door to the Hyatt.

I think I live in the Porsche Black hole. 200 miles from So-Cal, and I never see another Porsche. I was President of the local PCA, after I left they disbanded the club!

Hi Dmarv,
I live in Visalia, and see a few 930's and some 70's driving around, and your correct a bit of a black hole.

Just started the thread for an event right at the end of July, I think we will have a good crowd this month. We have a lot of new guys out there that have to bring out their Porsches:

LA/OC/SD (SOCG) Ortega Highway Drive - July 30th

Carmad, I know 3 of the 930's in Visalia. Maybe 2, I think 1 moved out of town. Glad to see another Central Cal Porsche nut! I lived in Visalia for 23 years.

Little wonder So Cal is such a hot rod capital.

It's not enough to have a cool car - it's got to be customized in order to stand out from the crowd!

+ on fire and attended to by no fewer than 3 firetrucks!

Coming home last night at 10:30 on Ventura Blvd, I suddenly realized that there were 3 of us in a row: a Cayenne, 4S Cab, and me. Too dark to see if any of them were willing to wave. But I must admit, most of the P-cars I see are all of recent vintage (996/986/Cayenne). No one waves because they're inevitably yakking away on a cell phone. That's what Tiptronic's for, I suppose.

Yasin,
the fact is the most Porsches sold in the USA is in Florida. Champion porsche sells more per year than all of the other dealers combined. NJ has a pretty large population of porsche owners (3-4000) in their PCA membership. Newport is an anomaly for Porsche statistics.
