82 911SC First Porsche Oil Leak
I am happy with my car, but not the oil leak. Zero drips and just a tiny amount of seep where present on initial inspection and following three extended test drives. This car was extremely dry, definitely a positive in my desicion to purchase. During my drive home home, at a fuel stop, I added 1 quart of oil. When I got home my "dry" engine was dripping oil from the center low spot of the case. Prior to adding the quart, checked at idle, hot, level ground the the oil level was 1/4 inch above the lower dots. As I used up that quart (I love driving this car and often!) the engine seems to start to dry up agian, or at least not drip as much. My last oil addition produced even faster dripping. I added, as a test, 1 quart taking the level to 1/4 inch above the upper two dots on the dipstick, when I got home I could watch oil drip drip drip off the center low spot of the engine. As I am using up this quart, the drip rate is again diminishing.
Thanks to this board, I have already gained free horse power by adjusting the throttle linkage to open all the way, big jump in power. I also just replaced my forward shift bushings and added a WEVO coupler to improve, dramatically, the quality of the my gear changes. Do you have ideas for me about about how to attack the source of my oil leak? |

Wayne's 101 Projects book has a chapter on hunting down oil leaks.

Try 1/2 over...you'll have oil oozing out all over. edit: anything above the lower dots is fine. no reason to add.

I usually run @ 1/2 inch BELOW the upper marks on the dipstick...to avoid overfill/ overspill. There's over 11 quarts running around in there so staying a bit under the top is not going to starve the oil supply. Oh, how I wish I only had one little leak....

It dripped no oil at the bottom of the the fill range (just above the lower marks, quantity gage on bottom and not moving. It started dripping some oil with with my first oil addition (level 1/4 inch below the upper marks, quantity gage in the middle). It dripped oil at a faster rate when refilled to 1/4 inch above the upper marks (guage near top).
My thought was the leak was asscociated directly with how much oil was in the tank. I did not intend to fill it past the upper marks. I would not think this extra amount above the upper marks would induce/create the leak. It started leaking when filled to a level between the marks. Maybe the leak is unrelated to adding oil, and I developed a previously unknown leak during my 70 mile drive home. It just seems the rate of this leak is directly proportional to the amount of oil in the tank. |
