Lucky I Had My Digi Cam...Look What I Saw in Traffic

I hope this owner does not mind me posting this, saw this coming home from shopping and grabbed the digi cam. I am not very good at identifying the early 911 models, but there was a emblem on the dash that identifed the car as a 911S.

Looks super sweet. Neat tow vehicle too.

For those who wondered if a VW bus could tow a 911... There is your answer.

Nice SWB racer there.

I'm pretty sure that that set up belongs to long-time Colorado Springs mechanic Jack Heavy. The car is a 67S and the bus has an RS 2.7 engine complete with MFI in it.

He's a good guy with lots of knowedge that I met recently.

That would make sense, I had a stock westy like that many years ago and it couldn't get out of its own way much less climb a grade. It made my other car, a M-B 240D 4spd feel like a supercar

Hi

Regarding towing with a Westy:

My 68 has an 80SC in it, towing my 2-horse trailer better than my F350 pickup. Gets odd looks on the freeway though when I pass trailer-towing duallies up grades on the 15 freeway.

Klaus

Using any air-cooled vehicle as a tow vehicle is dicey. But what the heck. If I had a '67S, I'd tow it with a moped if I had to.

Notice how the cars are passing him in the right lane I guess as long as hills aren't a problem, it can be done.

I was about to ask the same thing... i heard it was bad to tow on back wheels. Is this a myth or just a best practice?

The myth came about with rear wheel divern cars because the transmission and differential fluid wasn't circulating when the engine wasn't running. And thus the gears were sitting in "stale" fluid.

I really doubt that a short tow of even 100 miles would hurt anything. Besides, racers change their fluid often, dont they?

Might not be a tow-situation, could be the Porsche pushing the bus!

I would really love to see pics of that installation. Do you use the stock transaxle? What kind of adapters/mounts did it require?

The biggest problem is with rear drive *automatics*. There is arguably some issues otherwise, but it's the fact that the pump doesn't work in automatics when driven by the drive shaft rather than the input shaft.

Either that or he's passing the car who is taking the pictures!

The tranny is a 091 bus tranny with the earlier bellhousing, built with stronger gears/diff, originally intended and built up for off-road racing. 930 CVs. R/P is 4.56, 4th is 0.82, third 1.21.

Clutch is a 2100# Kennedy. Flywheel is a VW type 1 with Porsche center section and VW shaft bearing. Made also by Kennedy. The Porsche 4-bolt pattern is identical to the VW type 1, so the engine bolts right up without adapter. I'll see if I can dig up some pics.

Regards,
Klaus

Nice, Reminds me of when V. Pollock moved from the east coast to the west coast, he towed his 550 with his VW bus and all his tool.

Hope this isn't a thread hijack.

Couldn't fit the new tires in the pcar so I hired a truck.

Other captions welcome.
