Could you look at the picture's
I have been reading a lot of threads about thermal reactors and trying to determine if my 76 911s has them. I have looked at pics on old threads and updated exhaust dont look like this. Can I assume I still have them {reactors}? Any input would be helpful

I'm no expert but I would guess stock exhaust, with heat, off your 76. Looks exactly like what I took off of mine.

Ye haaaa!!! No reactors, All I have read are horror stories. Only problem I Still have to figure out why she is getting hot. 85 degree weather runs 220 at 70mph every time I hit 80 or 90mph here comes 240-250 temp.

As for your oil temps.....240-250 Yikes! I don't know what kind of oil cooler comes stock on your car, but have you checked to see if your thermostat is opening? If that works, then I'd check under the right front fender to see what kind of oil cooler you have. If it's the trombone-type, you might consider an upgrade to a Carrera cooler (radiator type).

Brother did you luck out!
In 76 they had two versions, the ones originally sold in California had the thermals while the "49 State" cars ( Ohio and Florida included) got the SC style exhaust with a pre-muffler instead of a cat. which was also good for a few more ponies too. The oil cooler in the right front fend is black and cylindrical. How do I check to see if themostat is opening? If I remember correctly the oil cooler should be warm to the touch? sound right?

You may not have ANY external cooler on your '76. Look in the wheel well in front of the right rear tire for the external thermostat and oil lines. Then there should be two metal oil lines running behind the passenger rocker up to the front wheel well. The cooler would be inside the right front fender in front of the tire.
If you do have one and decide to touch the lines to check the thermostat BE CAREFUL! If it is opening and your gauge is 220-250 then your lines will be HOT! |

You are looking at the A/C lines. The black cylinder is probably the drier. Many 76 911's did not have any external oil cooler. I would look into getting one. My 76 did not have an external oil cooler and the PO added one. Oil coolers make a big difference!!

I believe all 76 912E's had thermal reactors.

Check to make sure your fan was upgraded to an 11 blade. The '76's had a 5 blade fan originally and an 11 blade fan is considered a mandatory upgrade. This helps move more cooling air over the cylinders.
Did you just get the car? Was it being used before you bought it (potential for mouse/rodent nests on tops of cylinders)? Did you get a PPI before purchasing? Are you mechanically inclined? Most here are DIY'ers. Get a copy of 101 Projects and a Bentley manual. The Bentley is for '78 and up but many things are similar/same and you can use it as a reference. We were all newbies at one point. Welcome. |

11 blade fan yes. Mechanically inclined just not extremely knowledgeable, but 2 hours a day on pelican and I am learning. Had CIS issue's, that are being resolved. Trying to get the fuel mixture correct which, from what I have read, can effect temp a lot. Getting a klacking nose on the left side from the lower valve cover erea. May need adjustment? If I advance the timing could that help with the klack?

I think the rule of thumb for air/fuel mixture is lean=hot and rich =cooler.
A Carrera cooler in your front fender will reduce your oil temps by ~20-30 degrees over not having one at all. They occasionally come up for sale on this site (classifieds) or you can buy new for much more $$. But a great investment none the less. How long have you had the car? Did you just experience the oil temp increases or have they been like this? You could look up tech articles in the tech section on this site, LOTS of good info!

The Haynes is crap. 101 Project is a good overview, but not necessarily a 'spec' book with torque values etc.
Timing should be set to 5 degrees ATDC with total timing of 35-38 degrees BTDC at 6000rpm. I believe this is with the vac. connected. The distibutor, so i've read, is vacuum retard, mechanical advance on the '76. Timing and mixture can have a big effect on temps. Do a valve adjust, check the timing and then the mixture. FYI - those are not Turbo lower valve covers on there. If you take them off they will most likely twist and not seal well. A popular and relatively low price upgrade is the turbo lower covers that have additional ribs. As you are well aware by now, spend enough time here and you may as well direct deposit your check to Pelican..... |
