Small block V8 ? .... value of old motor in photo?
Hello ....
I'm glad to find this web site .... I've recently ended up with a used Porshe .... a 1976 '930' (???) .... (this one is a 'turbo', but looks about the same as all the 911 Porshes I've seen over the years but its wider than the real old ones) Help with a few things will really be appreciated: Will a small block Chevy 283 or Ford 289 possibly fit without re-inventing the car itself? Mounting kits available? Is the old motor worth taking out carefully to resell? (it cranks right up and runs good, but its hard to show that once its out of car) Photo of motor still in car and other pics shot before I brought it home ... here: http://www.rickcrider.com/porsh.htm Thanks in advance for any help ...... Rick |

Hi Rick,
Welcome aboard neighbor. Why not keep the motor you have? A small block was not made for the car or the car made for a small block. It is possible though. Using the search may bring more results. I think one Pellicans here has a Chevy small block. If you are set on selling your motor let me know as I am looking and located in NC. Austin

Hey, thanks for the welcome and for the follow-up help!! "What goes around, comes around!" .... since you're motor-shopping, consider this one 'yours'. In fact, since you're not very far away .... and, if you don't mind getting greasy .... come help take it out and it's yours for the days labor!! Cheap enough? (Plus, you can even 'test drive' it before we cut it loose ... ) Rick |

Dude, do yourself a favor. Don't jump right into a conversion, at least drive the car for a while and see if you start to like the 930 motor .. my bet is that if you give it a fair trial, you won't be thinking about swapping it with anything from Ford or Chevy anymore. Converting the car also has inherent problems that have rarely been overcome, and even more rare is one that is actually reliable. Just my $0.02
BTW, Welcome to the board. ![]()

After the conversion the car will be worthless; the tail alone will probably fetch more money than the car. Considering this is an early 930, in what looks to be relatively good conditon, I would restore it.

It looks like this car is in pretty good shape. Did you buy it for a song? That's about what it will be worth on the market if you modify it with the small-block. A porsche flat six turbo engine can give you all the performance you need in this car with the proper modifications and is pretty strong as-is.
If the current engine has major problems then you could spend a lot of cash to get it straightened out but at least the resulting car would be easier to get sorted out and would retain its value. If you decide to yank it, obviously, I'll be at your house within 48 hrs notice to work a day for the removed engine and I'll even bring good beer. ![]()

WOOPS!!
.... well .... I've just tuned back in ..... looks like I should fess up. Maybe even apologize as well. What was meant as an off-key, late night 'tongue in cheek' introduction from a newbie has become 'foot in mouth' syndrome on this end. Guys .... I'm a die-hard 'tech/gear/info/DYI - Porsche head' .... no worry of domestic cast iron replacing that alloy!! Been lurking around here recently .... recognized your enthusiam and down-to-earth dedication to the 911 species .... looked like good company to keep to me. A previous 82 SC owner / PCA member back in the late 80's/early 90's. More recently, the land-pilot of a nice 89 Carrera cab .... a 'keeper' type. Well .... a keeper until about two weeks ago. The pet Carrera became 'not so sentimental' within hours of stumbling across the 76 turbo coupe. Discovered the 930's existence on a Sunday afternoon. Called owner. Less than a couple hours away. Drove. Got first peek at it around 11:30 that night. Literally .... within a few short minutes of peeling back the generic car-cover, it was clear that this little red turbo coupe needed to come live with me. The next two or so hours confirmed same. It wasn't infatuation. Not just the typical 'another-car-lust' that can easily overwhelm a car-guy. There was just no reason *not* to make every effort to own this Porsche. ASAP. The 'before someone else finds it' mindset had set in ..... right along with the 'gotta raise cash' brainstorm mode. Left, reluctantly, to head home. Wide eyed. Treated myself to a 2 AM, small-town Waffle House steak breakfast. A congratulatory gesture. And time to ponder, scheme & squint at the Canon 2" LCD, flicking through the gigabyte of 930 'baby pictures' I'd just shot. My faithful Cabriolet visible just outside the window ... top down, ready and waiting .... totally oblivious of my turbo-charged infidelity and it's new 'red-headed-stepchild' status. I'm rambling ... sorry. Anyway .... Monday & Tuesday were spent plotting, begging, borrowing, scheming and generally brainstorming through the "what can I sell, quick" scenario. Persistence does work. I brought it home that Wednesday .... week ago this past Wednesday. What? PPI? What's that? Pre Purchase Insanity? Post Purchase Intoxication? Then, yes .... excellent PPI. Again, sorry for the bad attempt at humor. Hope I can still hang around. ![]() Rick Crider Last edited by Rick Crider; 07-24-2005 at 12:03 PM.. |
