A sad story about my 1970 911E MFI:
I took the wife for a short ride last night and on the way home the car just died after loosing power. Cranked & cranked and nothing until letting her sit for a few minutes. She finally fired up, but only ran for about 1/2 mile before quitting again. After waiting it started up. for the rest of the ride I kept the rpm's up. She would die, then fire up again before fully stopping (In gear with the engine turning). This happened about five more times but we did make it home. when in the "no start" mode I checked for spark, OK, when running dwell was good, 37 degrees. I jumped (hot wired) the stop solenoid and no change. I think this rules out the RPM transducer. Feels like fuel starvation to me. The fuel pump is almost new (2-300 miles on it). No fuel odor at the exhaust when she is not firing. If I let her sit for awhile, it will start, but die again after a minute or two. Pressing the micro switch at 2000 rpm causes a rising and falling idle until it stalls out. Recently, I had been experiencing a hard time starting when warm, after sitting for an hour or so. Seems related. Any thoughts before I dig in to this new problem? Your help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks, Ron Y ![]() ![]() |

Ron,
Sounds like a potential rusty gas tank/strainer/clogged fuel line problem to me ... You may want to run an output test on the fuel pump straight into a large glass pickle jar ... it should put out 1000 ml in 30 seconds, and if sediment is visible ... it may be time for the fuel tank to be steam cleaned and sealed. Fine bronze screen under the fuel line outlet [and gland nut] should be removed before the tank cleaning and treatment!

![]() ![]() Thanks Warren: BINGO! I pulled the sender and indeed much crud around the screen. Using a safe pneumatic system, I "Vacuumed: the crud out and she is running fine again. I think the tank is on it's last legs. I noticed a vendor selling aftermarket tanks for 70-71's. Anyone have experience with these? Thanks Again!
