brake diverters (993 brake air scoop) question

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone makes an aftermarket of this 993 piece. Or, if I have to get one from the dealer, if anyone has the p/n handy, or can tell me where I can get one for less than a dealer would charge. Thanks, all!

Edward

Got mine thru Pelican as well.

Whether they help or not on pre-964 cars, I dunno.

I put them on my car and my pedal definitely gets softer by the end of the day @ Blackhawk. But since i'm a full-on rookie with only two events under my belt? Probably has something to do with my braking technique, since my buddy (also driving a '87 coupe) has no cooling diverters, probably still has the splash shields, A/C and bumper pads still installed, stock suspension and is running PF97 pads, ATE fluid, Powerslot rotors and A032R hard compound tires with no need to bleed his brakes after driving plenty aggressively for five 1/2 hr. sessions yesterday. He's definitely using almost ALL of the car's available braking and lateral grip.

I'm running Yoko ES100 tires, F/R HD/Sport Bilsteins, 22/29 t-bars, heavy RS America seats (with a big 'ol stereo amp under the pass. seat), complete A/C removal, ATE fluid, Ferodo DS2500 pads, no splash shields, 993 diverters and the hub block-off plates to try 'n force the air thru the rotor vanes instead of out the center. I'd bet that one more session may have required a brake bleed. My pedal got quite soft. Never went away completely, but was much softer than the pre-track rock hard pedal.

First of all, they are cheap, even through your dealer (but buy them at Pelican and support this site).

Second, I have them and they help tremendously. I pulled my splash shields, installed the diverters, and I have yet to see fade - even when I push really hard on the track. Now, granted I have 930 brakes that are a bit larger than stock Carrera brakes...

I am running Toyo RA-1's and ATE Super Blue fluid. I am using an aftermarket pad that is a good compromise between street/track (I can't remember the name!).

Edward,

For what it's worth, I've used the 993/994 diverters and they really do not offer enough cooling to solve SC/Carrera brake issues. I now use the AJ-USA under a-arm scoops with the hub block off plates. Add that to Carrera front brakes, Hawk Blue pads and Motul 600 Fluid and I don't have soft pedal problems at the track anymore.

BTW, that is with street tires. I'm sure if I went back to R rubber I would have issues again.

I'm installing mine tomorrow night. Let's see some install photos. I've seen ghetto zip ties and some pretty fancy stuff. How's everyone done them?

I would say your brake pads are the problem.

Armando,

I agree. Other friends running PF97's seem to have less of a problem than I! Bill Verburg's always said that the Ferodo DS2500's are marginal for track use. I can now attest to that.

Here's my scoops.

The pads I use are PBR/Axxis Ultimate Ceramics. I am very happy with them.

"The PBR Ultimate brake pads feature a special Kevlar® and ceramic-strengthened formula with a high co-efficient of friction and excellent high temperature wear and fade resistance. Designed for ultra-high performance driving and hard-braking applications, PBR Ultimate pad users will benefit with extreme stopping power and high resistance to brake fade at high temperatures, meaning the decrease in friction over repeated heavy duty stops, as the temperature increases, is minimal. PBR Ultimate pads boast a maximum continuous working temperature of 550° C (1022° F degrees). Consistent throughout its operating temperature range, you’ll get dependable, predictable stops time after time while maintaining a solid pedal feel."
