snag front in Bilstein replacement
Car is a 77 930 that never had a strut replacement. I got as far as removing the retaining cap on the strut housing, then stopped for fear of breaking anything. How do I remove the cap? Is it threaded or pressed? Is there a special tool? Am I too weak? The Bilstein housing looks different then the Boge/Koni struts that I can just unscrew with a pipe wrench.

If it's the upside down Bilstein insert the upper cap doesn't come off. There's a small roll pin at the bottom of the strut. The insert should pull out after the pin is removed.

that makes sense, I was looking at the wrong end. Now I understand why the lower insert is shaped like that.
Thanks David

When you install the new roll pin, the slot in the pin should face away from the shock rod.
