15" Wheels/tires for 911; which tires?

I have a 1989 911 with the standard 16" wheels and Michelin Pilot Exalto Tires. These tires are smoother than the Conti tires that I replaced. Driving on smooth aspahlt roads is great. The problem is that I live in the Detroit area, and the roads suck here. Every expansion strip rattles the interior. This is not so bad for me, but I feel like I am ruining the car.

I would like to try some 15" wheels and tires, and keep my 16" so that I can switch between the 2 based upon what kind of driving I will do. Should I go with the Porsche recomended W rated Pirelli P6000, or the all season H rated BF Goodrich Traction TA? I cannnot find too many other tires in this size.

Thanks!

Doug,

I am researching a similar issue. See my "Mid Year Tires" thread for more info. I'll also be monitoring yours for other insights. I guess you are looking foera smaller wheel/ higher profile tire.
what sizes are you using on your 16s? Are they 6s and 7s ?

Take a look at the new issue of GrassRoots MS. There seems to be a liitle better selection on the 15 & 16's. IMO.

Doug,

I had the same problem you described with my street driven 911. Terrible local roads felt like they were shaking the car apart.

I was running SO3s on 16s and as the SO3s wore down they became pretty rough riding.

After a little research I put on a set of Avon Tech M500, an ultra high performance tire with a silica embedded compound. The tires run so smooth over real roads that I'm fine with 16s all the time. The Avon's are probably the softest running tire in the catagory and in TireRacks comparisons they outperform the SO3s so I've been very happy with these.

Changes the entire car for the better.

I think I paid $95 for each tire.

Let us know what you decide.

To give yourself some more headroom on rough roads you will want a higher profile tire w/ the same OD as stock ie 70 instead of 60.

The factory equipped them w/ 6 & 7 x15 w/ 185/70 or 195/65f & 215/60r

or optionally

7 & 8 x15 w/ the same tires.
