Just primary muffle for 3.6 conversion?
Will the primary muffler work as a stand alone muffler for my 3.6 conversion? It looks like it will fit under my RS bar. Inlet and outlet become 2 inlets plumbed to B&B headers. Cut 2 holes for twin pipes out the back.
What do you think? |

For a 3,6 there are all sorts of muffler modifications. You can do a cat bypass, a primary bypass, a secondary bypass, and combinations of these. On my car I have used a cat bypass with a primary bypass and found it to be a little loud for the standard passenger (wife). The secondary bypass will be louder yet with a cat bypass will be louder yet...
For your situation with headers, the muffler modification may work, but it will surely be loud. Maybe that is ok with you? Good luck -

Thanks for reply. My first mod may have to be a wife bypass! The engine is in a '76 car so cat and second muffle won't work. I've seen what most people who have done this conversion have done ie flowmaster ect. I was wondering if anyone new what's in that primary muffle and if anyone may hav try what I'm suggesting. It looks to easy for someone to have not given it a go.

Have a look over on the Rennlist 964 board. I seem to remember someone posting a cutaway of the Primary. That may tell you whether it is possible from a mechanical point of view and if there would be too much turbulance (bad flow) created.

Couldn't find any info but thought I'd give it a go. It fits really well. Just had to move the heater tube foward a little and slightly flatten the curbed edge .This gave me about 10mm clearance at the closest pointfrom the bar.img]http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads5/964+muffler+11122525766.jpg[/img]

How much clearance do you have with this muffler? I went back to SSI's and a stainless banana muffler but had to re-index the rear fiberglass section to make sure I had some clearance. Do not want the muffler melting the glass back end! Joe A

It is only close at the very outside. I can still get a bit more from the muffler and by twicking the bar a little. How much is enough? Thought I would find some heat resistant /reflective material to line the inside of the bar also. Will get some pics from underneath to show clearance .

Hi Thomas. I'd like to do all the bends and the flang coming from the headers in stainless steel but I'm having trouble finding the 3 bolt flangs in stainless. It won't be difficult to connect . It's almost just a 90 degree bend. I've cut both outlet holes in the muffler. It's not symetrical in there but I torched a few holes that should let things flow a little better. I've had a suggestion to stuff some stainless steel pot scours in there to help keep things a little quieter! Very high tec. The thing I like about it is it fits so neatly in the stock position and I can have the early sport look of the twin pipes! It may have flat spots and not flow well but we'll see.

Joe I followed your backdate project with interest. Have lots of pics of it's progress but never saw the finished product. Mine is a backdate also '76 RS! Here's the front.

Generally a muffler is designed so that the gases flow in a certain direction. When going in the anti direction there will be more resistance to flow and probably less attenuation of noise.
I also see a lot of work in trying to make the bends at either end of the can for the inlets to the muffler. Do let us know how it works out.

The hoses are (I assume) going from your oil cooler to another one on the other side??? Glad to see more backdated cars out there. Yours looks very nice! Joe A

Here you go! The B&B exhaust fit with their stock muffler but it was too close to the oil tank "S" hose, so went back to the SSI off of my 3.2 for now. Either way the fiberglass bumper was too close to the muffler using the old stock rear mount that you had. Need to spring for the different rear mount that gives me more room in back but until then we sectioned the fiberglass rear bumper and gave it another inch of room so hope it does not get too hot. Car is not painted yet and needs to be lowered after I backdated and pulled all the heavy bumpers off of it, but sure is nice to drive it again! Your old engine is a nice change from the 3.2 but if I found a vario-ram intake system might look at upgrading it. Other than that am going to drive the damm thing for a while. The A/C is not on it yet so I take it out only in the early mornings but that will change in September. JoeA ![]() ![]() ![]()

Joe your car looks very good. Few little things to go but your nearly there! Your running different rear tires? OK the muffler. It doesn't work. It fits well ,looks good but is TO LOUD. Back to the drawing board.
