Decklid Shock w/Carrera Tail
I just installed a Carrera Tail and my Decklid won't stay open as it is heavier now. Any recommendations?
I have one shock only. is this Heavy duty will solve the situation? Heavy-Duty Rear Engine Lid Shock, 911 (1974-89), each Selling on Pelican here It seems there's no attachment on the chassis for a 2nd shock Tx for your help! |

A trip to the garage shows the Passenger side shock mounted to a bracket attached to the hinge. The Drivers side is done in the same manner. A U bracket on the firewall is where the shock is attached at the rear.
As you can see I converted over to a locking shock (Driver's side) that is actuated by a sprung pin mechanism. I don't believe this product is available any longer as it was handmade years ago. Do you have the same bracket setup as my '85? Passenger side: ![]() Driver side: ![]()

One new shock holds my factory carrera 3.0 tail just fine. You don't need two unless it a heavy intercooled turbo tail.

Or you can PM me, I just took off my turbo tail off and have shock that works great that I dont need.

I read on PP once that the spring on the latch, or something is different for cars with tails so that it will unlatch. I don't know if you have an unlatching problem or just a staying open problem. A neighbor has an after market tail and he has to pull the release lever, and have someone lift the deck lid to open it.

I think this will be solved by adjusting the deck lid stops. It worked on mine, actually I changed to new ones.

Exactly the same. My sons need to pull the release lever and I need to lift the decklid and maintain it open.
I have one shock installed which is not an heavy duty |

Non-turbo passenger side decklid hinges do not have the tab hanging down to hook a strut to.

Yes I noticed this is why I have a dillema what to do. If I replace my existant shock with an Heavy Duty shock selling here on Pelican will solve the problem? Retaining with a piece of wood doesn't look too sporty! ![]() |

You can weld a bracket to the other side of the chassis and use the same saet up as on the drivers side. The dual shocks on one side let the lid warp.
There is a heavier duty spring on the latch for cars w/ spoiler. I posted the part # once.

The Porsche part # for the pneumatic spring mount bracket Bill is refering to is 911 501 729 01. It runs about $20.00 from the dealer. You will have to modify your existing right side lid hinge or obtain a right side hinge from a Turbo or Carrera that was equipped with a shock bracket on the hinge. There is a raised area where the mount bracket attaches to the body so it is not difficult to locate the spot to attach the mount bracket.

The HD spring is part of 930.512.052.00 lock upper part used on M473 and M491 packages.
930.512.039.00 is the right hand side fastening plate which needs to be welded to the chassis to use a right hand side strut. It was std. on M473 and M491 packages

Correction
911.512.039.00 is the weld on bracket on the hinge 911.501.729.01 is the weld on body bracket

As mentioned my Carrera with factory tail had the mounting plate. When I went over to the turbo tail the standard struts were marginal.
If you'd like dimentions or better pics let me know. Bill: is the M473 package the Carrera tail option?
