tire recomendation? (ones that last!)

all right! I did a search but couldn't find anything... BUt what I need it a set of new tires in the rear (i think 215-50-16) or 225,
I need some that will last a lot longer than the ones I have.
Anyone recomend some that would be great for a daily driver 911?

215 or 225s on a Carrera? Pretty wimpy if ya ask me....%^B

If you have 8 inch wheels on the rear.....245s are the hot set up.

Decent tires that have good wear are the Kumhos Ectas or the Falken Azenis. Available at the tire rack....

Too bad the Kuhmo MX's and Falken Azenis don't come in 245/16.

I would use Pirelli P6000. Front 205/55 R16 V; rear 225/50 R16 V. They last well and more importantly they really provide the traction my street car demands. Using wider Fuchs. A very good compromise of function and style with the classic look.

It is important that the alignment/corner balance (slightly lower than Euro height works well for me) be properly performed by a qualified Porsche tech to maximize handling and tire longevity.

Have your suspension components checked for wear too.

And Michelins would be my next best choice. On the track would consider different compunds.

Good luck.
Regards,

Ironically, I was looking through parts for sale and saw that mikez is selling 8 inch fuchs with 245 kuhmo's on them. Are they not the mx's then? Looking through tire rack I was finding a lot of tires that only went up to 225 in 16 inch.

I know the 245/45/16 does in Kumho...because I have three sets of them.

Tire rack has been wierd about the 245s lately...if you call them...they have them.

Look at the Toyo Proxes 4. Z rated and have a treadwear rating of 300 (approx. 30,000 miles). I have some on my BMW and will probably put a set on the Carrera when needed. They also have a Mud and Snow rating and are good in wet weather.

Well, for one - don't mix brands of tires front to rear unless you want to introduce some funky handling.

As far as the MX - it comes in only 225 widths at 16"

but the Kuhmo Ecsta Supra cames in wider widths up to 245/16

Here's the MX size chart from Kuhmo's USA website

and the Ecsta 712 Supra

If you go with the Ecsta's just keep a close eye on your tire pressures

For quiet and long lasting but still outstanding grip look for silca compouned tires.

Dunlop 9000 have been outstanding in this regard.

I have Dunlop 8000 (225/50/16 & 205/55/16) and with about 17k miles on them they seem to last long....lots of tread left. But, they are at least 3 years old and in the last year they seem to not be so sticky anymore unless I get them good and hot first.

Jeremy, what pressures do you run for the Ecsta 712's? I have a set of them on my car right now and while they are fine for the street, they seem less than spectacular for AX.

Sorry ajackson - I don't run Kuhmos - I have Yokohama AVS Sports - which BTW have been great tires. I have heard of a few accounts and personally seen the aftermath of one instance where the kuhmo 712 have "debanded" at highway speed when they were apparently run at lower than optimum pressure.

The one I saw caused extensive wheel damage and almost an accident - the one I saw pictures of caused an accident that could have resulted in serious injury. Luckily it only involved a totalled 911.

So - If you have the Kuhmo 712's - please make sure you keep an eye on the tire pressures.

Tire choices are obviously a very subjective, personal thing (depending on what your priorities might be), but if long tire tread life for all types of driving conditions was my objective, I would stay away from the higher speed rated tires....still some reasonably good choices in this category. Tire Rack is a good place to do your homework.

I currently have Toyo Proxies TS1 (treadwear280) and the front's are fine but the rears are bald after 2 years about 15K miles. (I guess we know how I drive.) But honestly I don't drive that hard, mostly highway miles. Can the rear wheels get out of alignment that much? I see that the wear is very even. no cupping or whatever else you call it. They just seem to go down even but quick.
I'll give Tire rack a call.
The rears look good with the 225 width. Any more would start to look like the rubber is too much wider than the 8" fuchs.
Allthough I would love to have the rims fill the wheel well, I bet I could go at least another 2, 2.5 inches before I encounter any rubbing. (spacers anyone?)

well thanks guys and Yes tires are a very tough subject since everyones driving habits are different. I just drove home in the rain and in Florida if it hasn't rained in a week that first time brings the "florida ice" (oil) up from the pavement and makes it very slippery but the bald proxies still stuck fairly well. I tried to break em free on an on-ramp loop. I vas preety impressed.

Just had a set of T1-S's installed today. So far so good. The scrubbed out Pilots they replaced will be a tough act to follow though.

Post of impressions to come...

When I bought my car it had new Dunlops on the rear. The PO had lowered it without realignment, and even though it drove just fine, I toasted the rear tires in about 1500 miles. Took it in for an alignment and have no excessive wear in the last 5K miles.

TS1 is a great rain tire and I would probably stick with that. I would also go with a 245/45/16 rear tire if you do indeed have 8" fuchs. (the number will be printed on the backside of the wheel)

I am in Florida also - and chose the AVS because of thier rain shedding ability.
