Carpet Redux
Need some experience feedback on this, please, if any have tried or gone thru this...
Renovation of 80 911SC and planning and buying pieces...currently on the docket - Carpet. Plan is to buy one of the complete kits from one of the complete kit suppliers, and have it professionally installed. Problem is this: we don't like at all the current carpets that World Upholstery or any of the others provide for 'correct restoration' - those go by the type and style name: Sliverknit. What we like are the carpets that went in the much older Porsches: Haargarn-Boucle Square Weave is the first choice, followed by Velour. World Upholstery, among others, tell us that because the Square Weave and the Velour are "much more rigid" because of the type of backing, they are "very difficult to install". The car is not currently driveable and we'd like to get the carpet issue decided and on order, so my local professional installation shop can not - they say - tell whether it will be a problem, difficult or impossible to install - without seeing the car. So...anyone out there done or had done a Square Weave or Velour carpet installation? And, if yes, how difficult was it? And the results? Thanks in advance! Jim

I don't have any experience installing the carpet at all, though we have samples of the square weave carpet that our manufacturer uses, if you'd like a sample of it sent out. Then you'll be on the same page as to how rigid the carpet material is.

Thanks Travis but I do have a sample of the square weave and the velor and the standard sliverstuff...and the square weave and the velor are stiffer...but I wouldn't guess on how much more difficult those are to get around the curves.

I bought a carpet set from our host (silverknit). Never installed carpet until this project. My wife and I had it torn out and installed in a day.
The seats will need to be removed. Be methodical and take your time. go slow. I would also suggest replacing the door weather seals and alm trim. Use 3M adhesive and weather stripe glue (buy it an any auto parts store). Good luck.

Mine is a 73E. I did the carpet as part of the general body restoration, and had all parts out. The carpet was a peice of cake...
Now the headliner...that was more like souffle! (sp?)

Jake - for your 73 the Velour or Square Weave may have been the original type carpet - did you use either of those?

Well, it has been about 10 years, and digging deep into the memory, I am betting I went with the domestic cut pile option, as money was VERY tight back then.
It is black, and as I recall went in easily. Getting the old one out was another story! For what it's worth, the install went well.
