Unhappy Window Mechanisim Repair

Today during a Club Tour, my son when to raise the passenger side window and we heard a pop followed by the window failing to move while he turned the hand crank. I figure something let go in my 1973 911 window mechanism.

A search of the archives gives some info on window regulator R&R but how hard is this to repair and what are the most likely suspects for the failure?

I found these tech articles:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/bob_tindel/911_door_panel_remove.htm

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/bob_tindel/911_window_regulator.htm

and these Postings:

Roll up window mechanism help!

Is there a 'How to' on door disassembly?

Removing Door Panels

Window regulator?

Window regulator question

How does my manual 1973 windows differ from the featues in these instructions?

Also, Are the directions in the Haynes Manual worthwhile?

Pictures and advice is appreciated.

Thanks for the help!

(subsequently added more posts as refernces)

Sounds like the aluminum spring anchoring center pivot failed. On a '73 the procedures are basically the same with some differences in the details of removing the door pockets and interior door panel. I suggest using masking tape to protect both sides of the glass from scratches where it will be passing through top of the door when rolled halfway down for regulator removal. Also use stronger tape looped around the top of the window/door frame to hold the glass up after regulator removal. I don't know if Pelican sells the replacement pivots (made of steel) but one of their competitors does. They are not an OEM Porsche part. The pivots also come in two varieties with the slot feature 90 degrees different; one has to inspect the pivot to determine which type to order. While the regulator is out it's a good time to clean it of old grease and then relubricate (take the nylon channel sliders apart and clean and relubricate them too). You may be pleased with the reduced cranking effort this will achieve. Cheers, Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the info. One of the threads I saw led me to think I would need to put the window frame as well since I could not get the regulator out via the slot in the door base.

Looking at the procedure, I think I am looking at 6-8 hours of fun which will be interupted by a wait to get the correct repair parts once I have the regulator out.

Harry, do you have a Stoddard's catalog? They offer an in house window regulator repair, but again, quite a turn around time. One thing I noticed...they requested that ALL parts be sent, even the broken ones.

Paul,

No catalog. For good or bad, I know in mid-September I will be counting on my 911 for regular duty as I will be loaning my work car to my mother-in-law for her to tour Oregon. I need to ge my car working by then....

In any case, I think I need to get the part out first and then decide how to get fixed.

Jim,

With your information, I pulled the regulator out today and found the connecting rods were not attached to the pivot pin. Looks like its time for a new pin.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Gang,

Does anyone have a photo of how the passenger side regulator goes back together? When I pulled mine it kinda exploded and I am not sure how to position the spring. A picture would be worth a few thousand words.

Parts should arrive tommorrow (thanks Pelican!) and hopefully this weekend I'll have a working window agin.

Harry
