I remember seeing that on TV. The rain suddenly came up big time and caught all those guys out. Even if the corner workers waved the red/yellows, it looked like it was impossible to see, and, more importantly, impossible to steer and stop. Fortunately noone was hurt badly. I think Kevin Buckler was a little sore for a few days.

I was racing last year at WG when the rain came in. It can be a very dangerous place!! Luckily I had the Quatro, if I had the 930 I think I would have headed to the garage and opened a cold one. Just too much hydroplaning at that course.

You'd think professional drivers would know that they have to slow down in the rain. Sheesh.

Reminds me of the GT1 race at the SCCA Run-off's back in... the early 80's? A sudden rain storm came up on the far end of the course which result in all of the big-hp, big-tired GT's piling up into the wall, including PL Newman, Jim Fitzgerald and lots of others.
It just goes to show that it doesn't matter how good you are, even experts have accidents. Safety equipment counts when on-track.

Good old Watkins Glen. The track is so big, it can be sunny on one part and pouring on another. Gives you an appreciation of how little run off that track has. From the edge of the track to the wall looks to be 20-30 feet.

Don't these drivers know to slow down when it's raining?

Are posters trying to be funny here? I sometimes don't get the comments. Or, do we just have some stupid people here?
Yesterday there was an Air France crash due to sudden and severe weather. Pilots have a lot more info at their disposal that some bloke out on the track talking to somebody BACK IN THE PITS. |

I saw that race on TV (a while ago). The rain came on gradually and wasn't raining that hard, then the sky opened up. The track design resulted in a sudden, large puddle on the entrance to that one corner.
Slicks actually perform very well in the rain, provided they are up to temperature and there isn't standing water on the track. The slick tires were performing well on the track everywhere except for that corner, where there was standing water. The drivers were driving the cars all the way around the track at near the limit, that's there job. Then they hit the puddle and lost it. Unless someone told them the puddle was there they had no way of knowing that one, particular part of the track would not provide any traction at all when compared to the rest of the track. It wasn't there the previous lap, then all the sudden it was there. No way you can reasonably blame the drivers unless they install crystal balls on the dash. |
