Deer Hit!

So... Saturday. I was driving with my brother in the Pcar along one of my favorite local roads (State Road, Medina, OH) at 10AM on my way to a golf outing. The top was down and it was a picture perfect day to cruise. Suddenly I noticed that a deer was standing in my path in a shady section of pavement. I jumped on the brakes and aimed for the other lane which was clear. At the last second the "wily" deer sprinted to the other lane so as to make solid contact with my nearly mint 1988 911 Cab. Huge repair bills danced in my head as we pulled off the the side and jumped out of the car. I'll admit that we inspected the Porsche before looking to the deer. Incredibly there was NO DAMAGE. A little deer fuzz was stuck to the paintwork but we could not find any damage! Not even a scuff. We think the deer stumbled at the last moment and was down low on impact which saved our butts. Another factor was the impressive braking ability of the 911.

A cloud of blue tire smoke hung in roadway for minutes as we checked out the hapless deer ( a fawn of 40-50 pounds) which had fared less well than the car. It was sad to see a mortally wounded animal in pain but there was not much we do about it. There is a major overpopulation of deer in this area and this kind of incident is common. My wife has hit two with major auto damage. So far this is my only experience.

No need for coffee, we were wide awake after this incident. Whew!

Yikes, glad you, your brother and the P-car are ok. Did the deer continue on his way or did he become road kill?

Wow!! I'm glad you're not hurt and the car is fine. We just drove from Jackson, MI to Oxford, OH via HWY 127 to meet up with about 150 other Porsches this weekend and saw alot of roadkill. All we killed was a bunch of bugs!

Glad you and car are ok. THis happened to me earlier this month and ran about $4k in repairs. Deer went about 25 ft. in the air and exploded, blood splattered all over mywindshield. Car is already repaired and I did a DE this weekend in it. On the way to the track today I froze like a deer in the headlights, when a real deer froze in my headlights. Unreal. No incident this time, though.

You are a lucky man. I live in a rural area, massive amounts of state park land. Deer are everywhere, especially at night and early morning. The scariest thing about the roads are the deer. The massive part of a deer is about head high in the car. Deer are the biggest detriment to driving fast.

Glad you and the car survived.

I installed Hella 450 flamethrowers in my fog holes after I had a near miss with two deer. I managed to slip through an incredibly small gap between them at an uncomfortably fast clip. I couldn't believe that I didn't take off a nose with one mirror and a tail with the other. Sheer luck, as I hadn't seen them until it was too late to even brake. The Hellas give me much more time to react.

fawn = baby deer of either gender

doe = adult female deer

buck = adult male deer

If you hit and seriously wound an animal - so bad that it is clearly going to die you should shoot it or if you don't have a gun cut its throat with a knife - cleanly. Don't leave it there to suffer for hours and die a lingering death.

We did realize that we should put the poor thing out of its misery. I don't pack a gun and I didn't even have a knife with me. Death by sand wedge would have been pretty ugly. We left feeling pretty stupid. Maybe I need another tool in the toolkit.

PS. I thought fawn was just a young deer of either gender. It still had some fading spots.

What deal? That they get to crap on the car when ever they want and we get to shake our fists in vain?

Thank you for the clarification, Randy. Obviously, as city boy, I need to study up on such matters. (not) (I have no interest in wildlife other than leaving it alone) di I get the mortally wounded part right?

I have to laugh. I can just see pulling a gun out and killing a deer as a SoCal resident. Next thing you know there would be gunfire from all directions in all directions. Yes, even in the local mountains and foothills where some deer remain (not many). And then the HP and park rangers would have you up on several charges probably including hunting w/o a permit. It's just nuts. No, I'd walk off and let it die. Worse things happen to animals everyday and nature takes it course. The deer would go into shock and not know a thing as it dies.

do you guys think you can kill a deer with your tire iron?

i read an article about those professional hunters that use bows to thin the herds in neighborhoods. they work while folks are in bed, and everything is gone by the time you come out to get the morning paper. and the meat goes to feeding the homeless. all good, except maybe for the deer.

I probably might have seen that if that last paragraph was there but I could swear it wasn't when I responded. It ended with the 911 having impressive braking ability. It might have been there, it was probably the drinking. Thanks for the dose of common sense.

Yes, gangs of armed deer roam many neighborhoods of So Cal.

Why do the deer always run at the car? Birds fly away, squirrels turn & run, but deer run at the car even when you're trying to swerve. One of those silly fawns hit the front valence on my old 4x4 which ended up popping up the hood since the hood latch was attached to the valence by a vertical member.

If you don't have a gun, you can try this move.
