Fathers day weekend was the last time I drove my 71. Ended up frying the clutch that was going bad to begin with. After a fun UHaul trip home with my son the Stay Puff has been in the garage waitng from some attention. During the past 2 weeks or so I have been sneaking out the garage after the kids have gone to sleep to do the misc stuff and get the engine ready to come out. Well with 3 kids and a full schedule my chance to remove the engine and tranny was this am. Wanted to do the traditional engine drop party but since the notice would have been like 30min max I opted to do it my self. 2 hours later the engine and tranny are out.
![]() ![]() So now over the next couple of weeks I will work on getting them seperated and replacing the clutch and anything else that might need to be done. Will send some things of to be polished and powder coated to clean up the engine. Will also attempt a battery relocation at this time. Will try to have a re-install party. ![]()

Wow, you scared me. I didn't know you fried a clutch; I must have missed that thread. Knowing the motor you have, when I saw "engine drop," my jaw dropped. Glad it's only the clutch.
Separating the two can be a fun problem. Make sure you understand what to do and when about releasing the pressure and twisting the ears on the TO bearing to free it from the fork. Otherwise, you are going to be swearing in front of the kids, ![]() ![]() Get a cheap plastic disc alignment tool when you order your clutch parts. Some kits come with them and I think they all should for the prices they get. Good job. I can't wait to see the pics of the reinstall with the new goodies. |

I second that, where's the pic of the greasy guy standing in the empty engine compartment holding a beer? You've been around long enough to know that is not optional when you drop the engine.

Cool Dan. I told you it would be simple. Get her cleaned up, and install the new hardware. The you can start having fun again.

Thanks guys. I know that the shot of my fat arse in the engine bay is required but as I said, I was solo on this. It was a little early for the beers also
![]() Over all everything went smooth. Cant wait to tear into this clutch RR and get back on the track!!! Likely wont be until after September. My goal is to be running for the German Autofest mid Sep. Milt, you were my insperation to tackle this. ![]()

Nice work. I did mine earlier this year, and two of the added things I did was have the alternator and starter rebuilt for about $125 total. It seemed like cheap insurance, especially since I detected a slight burble in the alt when I spun the shaft. A lot easier to do these while it's out.
