Please help me test the new search engine!

Hi folks. I just spent about 60 hours in the last week improving and fine-tuning our search engine. It shoud theoretically act like you're holding the mouse up to your head, and it's reading your mind. I've got a lot of fancy algorithms in there and I've made lots of improvements, which I won't disclose quite yet - I want to see what you guys can find.

Please let me know if you can break it - that is, enter something into the search engine and have it spit out something not even close (has to be a reasonable search, for example searching on "Pamela Anderson" oddly enough won't show anything except Chucks' finned lines...).

Let me know if you find any problems!

You can search using the box at the top of this page...

Thanks for helping out!

-Wayne

Works great Wayne! 28 search results for Pamela Anderson too. Lol. No, really I couldn't break the search. Maybe becaue it's almost 2:00 AM, but I can't really notice what exactly was changed.

Is there a way to be able to use 2-letter terms in the search subject - eg when wanting to look for threads on:

RS clones/replicas
RS parts for sale

etc ?

Can't search in either engine for a 2 character word. Sometimes the ability to find works like H4 is helpful.

Okay, sorry for not being super-clear. I changed the whole site search engine, not the forums search engine. You guys are looking at the forums search engine.

For clarity, search here:

Thanks,

Wayne

Hi Wayne

Looks like it's searching well, but when the client side counter zooms down and the page refreshes, the tachometer displays a broken image:

I was able to stop it, looks like it's this one:

And it lets you use 'c2' as a search string - that's an improvement right there.

I searched a few things, and they popped right up. Works great.

Now where did I put that credit card?

I wonder what "popped right up" gets you?

Wayne, I'm not sure what you fixed, but the biggest problem that I have with the search engine is irrelevant results. For example, I search on 1971 911 brake pads and here's what I get. This is a good example because that combination of terms can only mean one thing, yet the search engine somehow pulls out owners manuals and shift boots.

Can't you design the engine to first find the items that contain all or most of the search terms?

Very nice. Now, if you'll put 60 minutes into the "Pelican Parts Story," it will be updated and correct and not showing Darren, Steve S. and Jared as employees, amoung other things.

Frankly, I'm jealous of your skills.

Me too. I was looking for the engine bay fuse cover. The search found the later model only - not the older version... but added a huge amount of other, unrelated items.

It 100% does that. You entered "1971 911 brake pads" and it made the best matches based upon the words that you entered. If you searched on "brake pads" from the early 911 section, it would have returned very good results, but including the year in the search causes it to match a whole bunch of other results that have "1971" in the description.

I guess the solution would be to search the description field for the year, remove it from the search description, yet figure out that 1971 = early 911, and filter results based upon that.

Anyone else have this problem? Seems to work fine here at home, and at the shop...

Okay, I just put the "search year" function in there, so if you type in 1971 911, it only searches the early year sections. Try this:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_Search.cgi?please_wait=N&FILTER_911E=ON&FILTER_911M=ON&FILTER_911L=ON&FILTER_996M=ON&command=DWsearch&command=DWsearch&REFINE=Y&description=1971+911+brake+pads+&FILTER_911E2=ON&FILTER_911M2=ON&FILTER_911L2=ON&FILTER_996M2=ON&description=911+brake+pads+&x=0&y=0&FILTER_911E=ON

This should return basically what you're looking for (no irrelevant results).

The new search works excellent. It brings a lot better results than before. Oh, and the tachometer when you are searching is working fine for me. Good job!
