Muffler clamp options - mcmaster.com part # included
I used the below clamps very successfully. I'd strongly recommend them. McMaster part # 8946K38. I had to modify my muffler brackets (on the back of the engine to follow the muffler's diameter a bit. The modification took 10 minutes, a hammer and an anvil.) They are very high quality, stainless + yellow-zinc plated bolt hardware w/ nyloc nut. Good stuff. I tried Porsche stuff, but the muffler was a different diameter and nothing fit this nicely.
These are lightweight and potentially great match for many muffler applications! I bought the clamps from Mcmaster.com: Part Number 946K38 Constant-Tension T-Bolt Hose Clamp - 5-15/16" To 6-1/4" Range, 3/4" Band Width $6.83ea. $13.66 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1123631682.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1123632181.jpg |
Nice....very nice!! Thanks for the info!

original
Not OEM German, could cause catastrophic engine failure and death:rolleyes: PS, I'm JK, great idea, I used some stainless bandit, but it's not so easy to take apart.

A Nyloc nut on a muffler clamp?
Stephan |
works well. Thanks to doug's suggestion I sell these with all my kits! Thanks again doug. Infact just got an order today for 100 of those exact size and everything
|
oh doug show me a side shot of that car. Man I love the look of that!. Maybe after a few million sales of mufflers I will make one like that!
|
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1123643600.gif They are not normally nylock on those t-bar clamps, they are called flex-top nuts....all metal.

the ones I get are nylocks but they hold up on my car!

Looks alot like a Clampco brand band clamp. Bet you got 'em much cheaper from McMaster! I love that place. Seems like they have everything and the online catalog flat out rocks.
|
these things are made in rockford il called something like rockten company I don't remeber
|
Ben,
I'm glad these work out for you! Here's the side shot. Nyloc seemed like the wrong solution (plastic and heat don't mix), but I've checked my, run it hard and haven't had any problems. Worst case, I could use a jamb nut or replace the nut with Billyboy's offering. I've actually been buying a lot of hardware from McMaster. I bought M6, M8 and other bolts and nuts for use all over the car. It is so cheap to replace bad hardware when you buy in bulk. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1123648848.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1123648886.jpg Independent of the self promoting photos: I really hope this helps! This is an awesome board and its great to be able to search the archives and find good solutions to one's problems. Doug |
That has got to be one of the best looking cars I have ever seen!
What color is it? Do you have any pics of the interior? How long have you been working on it? You have excellent taste. If I continue to flatter you will you let me drive it? I'm in the process of rebuilding my 3.0 out to a 3.2. The 915 is already rebuilt and the car was originally silver. I'd like to someday end up close to where you netted out with this car, can you direct me to any threds about your process? |
doug if you ever decide to sell it let me know!
|
You can also reuse the original clamps on a larger diameter muffler by replacing the original bolt with a bolt about an inch or so longer. Worked for me.

I thought this may be valuable to share, for those who use different muffler sizes, but still want similar clamps.
Garry wrote: "Thanks for the write up on the muffler clamps. I am just now looking for a solution and this might be it. I wanted to ask you if you are using a maxflow as it looks similar to mine and I am wondering if the clamp size would work for my maxflow I am fabbing up for my 3.6 conversion." I used one of Ben Mcfarland's mufflers. (MB911 on the board). The clamps are made and sold in a wide variety of diameters. I temporarily installed the muffler, using zip-ties and wrapped them around, tightening them as I would the clamp. I then cut it loose and laid it flat to measure their length. I believe the clamps are offered in diameters, so I divided by 2 pi (to go from circumference to diameter) - you should come up with the right size. Again, hope that helps! Doug |

Thanks a bunch! I'm very pleased. The color is BMW two stage titanium silver. I did all of the work over the last four months or so. That includes oil cooler install, re-wiring most the car, interior, complete front and rear suspension, exhaust, engine tune-up, shifter rebuild, brake rebuild, fuel line replumbing. You can check out these threads or search on my user name: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/224453-custom-sparco-seat-mounts-install-w-pics.html - this one shows the interior and custom seat install that I did. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/229841-project-pics-all-four-back-corner-balance-early-rsr-look.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/233357-nice-parts-tarett-engineering.html suspension: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/226650-71-rsr-interpretation-project-update-4-w-pics-zinc-plated-rear-susp-bling.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/220706-update-3-another-rsr-clone-socal-bit-o-suspension-bling.html exhaust and wiring: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/217238-rsr-look-project-update-wiring-mb911-exhaust.html |

So you'd divide the length by only 1 pi to get the diameter........ :D That is an exceptional looking car for sure! Nicely done. |
KTL - YES!!!
oops, didn't check my work. Thanks for the review. Hopefully, someone else would catch it before ordering the wrong size. Doug |
thanks for the info Doug! I haven't been running muffler strap/clamps since day one...maybe I'll check mcmaster.com out. :)
Oh, and your 911 is absolutely gorgeous! What size are those Fuchs? |
Jeff,
Thanks! Glad to be of help. Fuchs are 17x9.5 upfront and 17x11 in the rear. Doug |
