Need quick answer: Will VW CV half moons work for an SC?
Hi Folks,
I'm replacing my CV boots today. My old ones had a thick flange on the end which did not 'wrap around' the joint itself; merely sat on top of it. I cannot seem to get these same boots anywhere. I ordered a set from our host, but they are the VW type where the flange is a thin, sheet metal affair that has a cylindrical section that fits down over the joint itself. From reading here, I understand that due to the softer metal of this type of boot, and also because of the bolt length difference this design would require, it's highly recommended to use the VW style steel half moons and Schnorr washers under the bolt caps. I'll be doing the work at a friend of mine's VW shop, and he's bound to have plenty of these around. My question is, will the VW half moons fit the bolt spacing on an SC's joints? Please let me know. Thanks, ianc

I had a pro wrench tell me to use the shorter bolts and blue locktite. No moons, no washers.

I'm actually at the shop now and I've answered my own question: the VW moons are exactly the same, so I'll be using them. Thanks for the response!

Here's a few pics of the process:
Here are the (weird) old style boots with the thick flange: Outer flange with gasket glued in place: Axle assembled: Detail of joint: Installed: ianc

Got a part # for those half-moons? I'd like to pick up some. I only have washers on mine.

I don't have one Rick, sorry...
The shop my friend owns specializes in VW buses however, so they should be fairly easy to locate if you have any VW shops in your area. You can see their shape in the third shot down to the left. I used these and the thin serrated washers that come with the joints, and the length with the long bolts was just perfect, with around a mm or less sticking out the back of the flange. ianc

Looks great - except the tranny (and you know I'm pulling your leg, right?)
