Smoke

I have recently noticed smoke coming from the indicator stalk when holding the flasher on main beam - Any ideas?

Thanks.

White Smoke = New Pope

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Actually, your high beam switch probably fried. My guess is that if you're not already having trouble with the high beams flickering and coming on by themselves, you will shortly.

Some people open the switches up and clean them. I don't think it's worth the time and effort. When this happened to my car, I replaced the switch. It's an easy job. The toughest part is replacing all the wires that go from the back of the headlight switch to the high-beam switch. If you're careful, and do them one-by-one, it's not that bad. Just go slow. Our host sells replacement high-beam/indicator switches.

Also, now's the time to install one of Marcus Sucro's relay kits on your headlight circuits. It will prevent this problem from happening again.

Good luck!

Thanks, do i need to take all the dashboard out to get to the switches for the headlights and indicator stalk.

I also noticed that the fog lights don't go off when the main beam is turned on. The car is a Swiss import.

The switch does smoke when any of the lights are on or off, but only when the flasher is held on.

When the main beam switch is pushed forward to leave main beam on by itself there is no smoke, only when the flasher is held on by pulling it towards myself does itr do it regardless of which lights are on or off.

If your Euro version is the same as mine, no, you don't have to take the dash apart. You remove the horn pad, remove the steering wheel, and remove the clamshell housing around the steering column. This allows you access to the high-beam/indicator switch.

To get to the headlight switch, you have to first remove the knob. There's a plastic retaining nut that holds the headlight switch in place. Using a snap-ring pliers, remove that nut and withdraw the headlight switch. You'lll then have access to all the wires from the high-beam switch.

Reverse the process for reinstallation.
