New Suspension Upgrade Questions
Greetings Fellow Pelicans,
My car has just gone through quite a bit of modifications and I am not sure things are right. The car is an early '89 Carrera. The suspension upgrades were fairly significant and I don't think the shop I go to really has much expertise in setting a suspension up. They did great work in putting it all together but the car just doesn't feel right. It seems to want to drift just a little at 80 or above. The list is as follows: Elephant Racing: Hollow 22mm and 29mm torsion bars, adjustable sway bars [f+r], poly/bronze everywhere and low friction a-arm mounts. Rennlist: Sealed mono balls [f+r] and triangulated strut brace. Bilstein Sports [rear] and Bilstein HD's [front]. Should I get in touch with Chuck at Elephant and ask him who I should take it to? My shop mechanics are fairly conservative and didn't lower the front end, so I did and that seemed to help a little. Sway bar adjustment? Corner balance? A complete set up/adjustment? Thanks, Drums ![]()

A complete corner balance and alignment is probably in order. This is usually only done properly by Porsche specific alignment specialists (in other words, Porsche shops). Someone out in Modesto probably can offer a great recommendation.

I agree with Doug. But I also wonder if HDs aren't a little soft for your 22mm torsion bar.

Dave,
I was thinking the same thing, though doesn't BA's book suggest something along these lines? Doug

U definetly need to have the car conrer balanced by a Porsche shop. You'll be surprised at the difference a little height adjustment on one wheel will bring. If you car is off balance (and after all those changes I'd be surprised if it was not) the behavior you are describing is very possible.
I would not worry about HD with 22mm t-bar.... |

If you lowered the front, it might have increased stability by putting more weight over the front tires, you might need to check the new, lowered, bump steer and toe-in. Wouldn't these change too in a counter-productive manner? Maybe you could benefit from having these adjusted, again, at your lower setting. It may be that stability was increased slightly more than is was decreased by lowering the car, giving a net effect of slightly more stable.
Just a thought. Doug

Your setup is very similar to mine: (Bilsteins HDs & Sports, Sanders hollow 22/29 t-bars, Polybronze bearings all around, Rennline monoballs & triangulated strut brace...along w/ some other stuff). I went with a shock & t-bar combo recommended by Steve Weiner after talking with him, so I trust his expertise on that setup. I also lowered my car to euro height (along w/ a bump steer kit), and had her aligned by a reputable shop... I couldn't be happier
