82's rev limiter kicks in at when the first valve crashes into a piston.

There is also a blue light that comes on in your rear view mirror.

Well, you didn't say whether it is a ROW or USA-spec car ... but, both had rev-limiters -- different types!
ROW -- rev-limiter rotor ... USA -- speed switch cuts off fuel pump ...

The rev limiter really kicks in when your wallet's empty.

ROW - just check that dizzy rotor! I have seen a few cars fitted with a non-OE rotor that DID NOT have rev limiter...
I even saw someone 'modify' the rotor, supposedly for track use - so check your limiter! BTW, reving the motor up in gear is normally safe (ish...) but miss a gear shift and none of the old factory rev-limiters will save you.

The fuel cut-off switch on my US 83 SC kicks in at just over 7K.
