Looking for Kelly Green '73 911E I sold...

Hi there!

I used to own a Kelly green '73E that I sold to James Spader, the movie actor, in May of '97. I moved from Colorado to California in 2001 and ran into Mr. Spader one afternoon at the Virgin Megastore on Sunset. I asked him if he still had the car and was told it was sold to a fellow in San Francisco... I'm trying to track down the cars current owner just to "check up" on it. I'm hoping that it was sold to someone who cared for the car as I did. I sure miss it and think about it often. It was a beauty!

I've started my search on the Early 911S Registry's message board. I think I may have run into a guy that saw and drove the car in 2000. He doesn't remember the guy's name who bought it from Spader but he remembers the car and it sounds like it was the right car. It had black mud guards mounted to the rear fender wells... the car came to me with them...and I never removed them.

Anyway, I don't have the serial number of the car, at least not where I might be able to look for it. Most of my things are still in storage in Colorado.

I was hoping that I could describe the car to you guy's and if you might know who owns it, you could forward my email address to them. ?

It was , as I said , a Kelly Green '73E coupe, no roof, perfect 7's all around, original paint, tan leatherette interior, sport seats, factory air, euro lights and lenses and those rear mud guards. It also had a small scratch in the paint on the passenger side roof. If you know of a car with that description it may be the one I'm looking for. I would sure appreciate a response if you might be able to help.

Thanks so much,

David

Too bad you let that one go...that's one sweet ride! My guess is that you would have to pay a LOT more than what you sold it for in 1997, unfortunately.

I think I know where the car lives. I saw something matching that description in the Marina area of San Francisco. I'll head out that way sometime and see if I spot it again. It may be in a garage though.

The fellow that owns it now happened to do a search of me on the internet. He said that my name was unusual... He had my name from the rather thick reciept book that I gave to Spader when I sold him the car. He happend to be adding a new reciept, for tires, to the book and at that point wondered about my name and did the search.I have posted everywhere I could think of trying to find this car. Anyway a link came up to a post I had left on Roadfly. There you have it, weird but true. I've emailed him back and hope to start a conversation about the car. He's driving it to Pebble Beach and I'm thinking how fun it might be to drive up there and see the car.
We'll see what happens!

I'm glad you found it too. I'm even more glad that you posted this b/c it only enforces the point and ensures that I'll not sell my car b/c I don't want to be in your situation someday.

and show us the pics if you receive any?
(even better, invite the owner to pelican)

I'm not sure you understand my situation. I am just trying to check up on the car. I had lost track of it. I owned this '73E for over 10 years. Every other Sunday, at the crack of dawn, for the 3 years I had it out in California, in the late 80's, early 90's, I ran the Ortega Hwy to Elsinor... some of the best 32 miles of Porsche road I've ever driven! There is nothing like an early 911 for pure driving fun and keeping your skills sharp! I'm not trying to get this car back or sad that someone else has it now.

To my way of thinking, it's fitting that the car keeps changing hands, so other folks can enjoy and care for it, as well as appreciate it. I will never forget the great memories I have with that car. I now have a newer Porsche. It's not better, it's different. It is, without a doubt, the best handling Porsche I have ever driven, and is as much fun as the 73E was and is. I'm making new memories with the Boxster S. It's all good, as long as the shiny side stays up!

I guess I misunderstood your post. I thought I detected sorrow in your writing which is understandable b/c I'd miss my longhood dearly if I let it go.

On the bright side, if the owner is attending car/porsche gatherings with it, that pretty much means that he is taking care of it very well.

I remember seeing Spader driving that car on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City with the windows up, smoking. I wonder if the tobacco smell has ever come out of it?

It was, indeed, a great looking car.

That's funny! The headliner, and the paint, was about the only thing that wasn't refurbished in the car. It was really yellow when I had it. It must have looked and smelled "not so great" after the stint in L.A. If the current owner gets back to me I'll find out if he replaced it or not.

He did say that the car see's limited use now, which is a great shame in my opinion. The car was set up perfectly when I owned it. I had Andial weight balance it. I can't remember how it came out; less than 7lb difference per corner... sound right? Whatever... it handled great! Early 911's rock! I really began to develop my driving skills with that car. It's sort of where it all started "seriously" for me...you have to take a 911 at speed that way...
