Wheels....

I had the same question a couple months back..one question is either 15" or 16" wheels... mine are 15's x 8 & 9. They fit with the right tire combo.

8 & 9 x15-18 all fit w/ the right wheel o/s and tire

I've used 6, 7, and 8's up front and from my own experience, the only combination that is guaranteed not to rub is the 6 or 7 with a 205 tire on it. A 225 on a 7 up front is going to hit the top of the lip unless you have sufficient negative camber. It will also hit the inner fender wall a full lock out. I run a 225/45 (unusually low profile, usually 225/50 in most sizes) and this cleared up many of the issues with running a 951 8 that I have on now. It still rubs slightly on lockout on the fender-walls, but I have protective rubbing plates on

I now have 225/45/16 on 951 8's up front and 245/45/16 9's at the rears. If your going to change to larger sizes, a few things you can do to maximize your success are:

1.Roll or cut your fender lips, especially front.
2.Maximize negative camber to change the wheel travel more inward then upward.
3.Increase you torsion bar size. A "floaty" car will cause more problems with interference the a stiff one.
4.Try to find a tire with a lower profile like the S03's 225/45/16. I originally had 225/50/16's on the front and I didn't like how they looked.
5.Find someone with a set that you are contemplating changing to and try them on first. This will save you alot of headaches if you have severe rubbing issues and you brand new tires are used and nonreturnable.
6.Read Bill V's data sheet. These very questions are why he compiled this data.

As the above states, the front 8X16 Fuchs should be from the 944 turbo. The offset for these wheels is 23.3 mm. This offset moves the wheel away from the fender. These wheels can be identified by there countersunk lug nuts. The rears will work with the 1986 ,and on, 9X16 911 turbo rims.

Car with 16X8 w/225's, and 9X16 w/245's.

This is true, but it does not move these wheels further away from the fender. 951 16x8's are closer to the fender by a half inch.

With the nominal same offset as the 911 7x16 of 23mm the centerline and mounting face of these wheels have the same relation. As a result the 16x8 puts it's additional width half on the inside and half on the outside.

The above picture also does not appear to show countersunk lugs. The wheels below are 951 8's. I use steel lugs and they are fully inside the hole.

Todd is absolutly correct, had anyone bothered to look this diagram shows the relative fitment of some of the different wheels being discissed here

What happens when someone can't find or afford 15x9s, but wants the width 15x9s offer? Can spacers help in that regard?

jamesjedi 08-20-2005 12:37 PM

That is interesting. I always thought my fronts were 944. I see the difference. They are much more sunk than mine.

Spacers only widen track, this can have unwanted side efefects as it also changes other facets of front end geometry.
