SC has starting issues when semi hot (ignition related)
I went to the gun store today and when I came out (30-45 min) no start. It just kept turning over. I checked for spark and got none so I started messing with the CDI unit (pertronix). I took to connector off and heard some clicking and put it back on. When I went to start after that it started instantly. Went to get a haircut (30-45 min), same thing happened. Took the connector off put it back on and instant start. Went to gas station (2 min) no problem starting. Came home sat for a while (1 hr) and went to try and start, nope.
Any ideas? |
Sorry, I meant to sy Prema-tune not Pertronix.
Oh, also it runs fine after it is started. |
It's your Permajunk ignition. I had the EXACT same problem. Right now I'm running on a spare Permatune CDI but am promptly getting a rebuilt Bosch unit soon. Do a search on "Permatune". You will see a lot of horror stories. Best just to get a rebuilt Bosch unit. There's something faulty in these Permatunes that causes them to die so soon (probably heat related).

Thats what I suspected.
I'll probably end up doing the same as you, running another Permatune until I can find something else. |
Blame the Permatune. I had a brand new one installed by a shop. Did the exact same thing about 3k miles and less than a year after it was installed. Once it started had to wait a few hours for it to cool off. Got worse and worse until the point it just up and dies while it's running.
Toss that thing in favor for a Bosch CDI and new coil. rjp |
FYI, the rebuilt Bosch units are like $400. If you buy them new, they are more like $1300, so a rebuilt one won't break your wallet as much.

Yes, I had 3 experiences when my Permatune quit on me while on the road. Fortunatley I wasn't going too fast and I was mainly on a 2 lane road. Then there were times when the car wouldn't even start after being parked...
theFONZ, I highly reccommend just getting the Bosch unit. You could buy a backup Permatune for a couple of buck if the Bosch quits on you, but what I am doing, even with the "spare" Permatune is risky... get a Bosch ASAP. |
Where can I find a rebuild Bosch? I tried our host and they are NLA.

Had the same problem using a Permatune. Got an MSD, and havent had any problems for two years
|
What all do I need to get to convert to MSD?
|
theFONZ, I Pm'd you.
Do a search for MSD. Here is a thread I started when I thought about getting an MSD ignition. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/235512-thinking-going-msd.html |
