dark while driving- help

87 911 coupe- a few months ago the bright lights would come on spontaneously while driving with the low beams on. I could flick the bright/ flasher switch and they would go back to low beam. Annoying but manageable.

However, this has recently progressed to the brights not coming on when I flick the switch or worse (many back roads and deer) they will spontaneously cut off while driving, leaving me in the dark at 80 mph or so. Any ideas where to begin?

thanks

dorschman, I had the same problem. You need to take the steering wheel off and remove the turn signal stalk. You can replace it with a new one or do what I did and look inside of the switch while you move the lever from brights to low beam to flash brights. You need to see (It's been a few years since I did mine so I apologize for the non detailed directions) which way the metal pieces need to be bent to make contact when the switch is in it's appropriate position. The metal contacts get bent over time.

thanks Jeff, we are planning to replace the steering wheel tomorrow so that sounds like the perfect time to assess the problem.

Dimmer switch.
I had the same symptoms on my '88 when I bought it.
GAD $24.95 on evilbay solved it.
