OBD II scanners - opinions

Does anyone have experience with either the PC based code readers/data loggers (AutoTap or Bowser Electronics) or the handheld code readers?

I don't want to buy something only to learn it is junk.

Cheers,
Ingo

Will these work in all the 3.6 flavours or only the 993 and later engines? Was also thinking about buying one of these scanners.

Thanks! JA

Edit: Does this puppy really cost $2000????? Spent 20 minutes looking on the net and only company who would even quote a price has it listed at just over $2000.

Do not need it that bad!

Joe,

They won't work on the 964/993. These engines are OBDI (proprietary). Only the later US 993's would. But then these are tough to use for conversions for all the known reasons, namely OBD II. I am in the market for a people hauler/tow vehicle, that's why I am asking.

After some more research I am leaning towards the ELM-based adapters and a laptop. This seems to be a cheap solution (I only need ISO) and allows data logging. www.scantool.net Thanks for all the ideas. I'll let you know if I get this and the hauler.

Cheers,
Ingo

The Baum is expensiive but seems to do everything the 9288(Hanmmer) used to do, have you priced a 9288 lately?

Porsche apps

still a cheaper alternative that does it all or most would be great.

Bill,
good point. I forgot that I would need a hammer to even bleed the brakes on the C4. That makes the Baum tool a nice choice over the unobtanium hammers. It's odd that no one came up with cheaper DIY solutions for that yet.

As for the PC-based solutions I think 300$ is high when you can get the ELM thingy for a mere 70$ on evil bay. After all it is only to play around and maybe find out why a MIL or CEL comes on. I won't need no support for Ford or GM ever as far as I am concerned

I got my PC based solution for $165 on Ebay. It was well worth it as I was able to diagnose and reset my codes on my Bimmer and allowed me to fix a problem for $20 that would have cost me several hundred in a shop.

Uwe Ross(Ross tech) said that they were working on a Porsche version of their outstanding VAG poduct, but that the limited market for Porsche precludeed any front burner efforts.

Bill,
this is from Uwe's website. I wonder where the Porsche activities are relatively to what he is showing here:

Will there be a Windows-CE/PocketPC/WindowsMobile or Palm-OS version?

Possibly at some point in the future, but we don't have a timetable yet. We conducted a poll of current and potential VAG-COM users about where we should concentrate development efforts. The results:

75 % Improving and adding features to the Windows version
11 % Porting VAG-COM to Windows CE / PocketPC
9 % Porting VAG-COM to Palm
3 % Porting VAG-COM to LINUX
2 % Porting VAG-COM to Macintosh
