Approach I'm taking is to replace stuff with yellow zinc as I'm doing maintenance. I'm saving all the original stuff, tumbling it to clean it up, and then will have it replated with correct cadmium when I do a full nut/bolt resto. There are still cad platers out there; even in California.
And I second the comment about Belmetric as a good source for yellow zinc hardware. Easy to order online, and they ship really quickly. |

I bought a kit, and do my own Zinc plating, to various degrees of success. Sometimes I just want a part plated quickly so I can install it the next day.

Can you tell us more about the zinc plating kit? That's pretty spiffy. Just wondering if it's worth it for mere mortals...

Hard to go wrong with McMaster. In isolated very specialized occasions I have found their selection of metric products lacking, but who can argue with a family owned company that ships in 10 seconds, has CAD drawings and specs of every product and does a fantastic job of explaining how one would choose between Type 316 and 18-8 stainless.
I used them exclusively for my motor rebuild and put together a whole package of sil bronze locknuts (exhaust), cad plated, yellow zinc, nylocs etc etc |
