Anyone ever seen a Bosch CDI like this?
It's a 3 pin unit, but I've never seen one like this.

I doubt that it is a CDI ... probably an early - mid '60s 'Transistor Ignition.' I have seen similar units on several Porsche race cars of the period in Frere's books ... used external ballast resistors wound on balsa wood boards, wasn't an integrated system like the CDI.

Wow! Well this is what's running in my 67S, and I had just assumed it was one of the M&W CDI boxes untill I removed it and found the Bosch markings.
That answers some strange problems I had with a bosch blue coil. In the pic I replaced the larger blue coil with the smaller one and the car wouldn't idle at anything less than 15 degrees advance and wouldn't rev past 4500. So I put the old (big blue) coil back in, but as a backup I purchased a black (CDI) coil. I'm now guessing that's not going to work?! So what the hell is this big blue coil, something special for this type of ignition? Or is it possible that my smaller new blue coil is just a bad unit.. Help!! ![]() ![]()

Actually, it says,
Commutator, sistema zazhiganiya. зажигания is ignition. One remnant of growing up in the cold war is that I can still read cyrillic. Doesn't look to be a VW, Benz, BMW or Volvo part. Who else used bosch as a supplier? NSU?

Retro,
What are the Bosch part numbers stamped on the bottom of the cans? Measure the primary and secondary winding resistances of the two coils, and maybe you will have an answer. A CDI coil will definitely not work! It doesn't have enough inductance to operate correctly, and would overload the driver transistor, and probably overheat, and maybe even burn out the driver transistor! My suggestion is to yank all of that cobbled wiring and replace it with the simple CDI system, since you already seem to have the parts for the conversion ...

Yeah, I just need the 3 pin harness for the CDI box.. the one off this transistor deal won't fit, then I'll swap it out.
The newer small blue coil numbers are 0 221 119 027 and 9 220 081 083 and reads 3.9 ohms The old larger blue coil has 0 221 118 003 and reads .8 ohms between the posts

Well, it appears this big blue coil is something specific to this transistor garbage.
It's 1-15 resistance is the same as my black coil at .8 ohms, but the # 4 post to the 1 is 10,900 ohms.. where my black coil is 710.

That ignition unit is a TCI (transistor coil ignition) as mentioned by Warren
and very similiar to ones used on the 917, which were not CDI types. "Well, it appears this big blue coil is something specific to this transistor garbage." - RetroSC - What do you think ALL late model OEM engines use, i.e. TCI systems?
