Is it me, or is this overkill?

Got these new pads from Pelican. The box they come in is ridiculous. It seems like so much packaging nowadays is way out of hand. I guess I can sort of understand high-priced small items at a retailer for theft prevention, but these are brake pads! With the foam, you'd think they were shipping computer parts. I'd just as soon get them in a small box, and save a few pennies. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125181935.jpg

I've been hoping someone would try those, let us know how they work

Jays72T 08-27-2005 02:46 PM

Overkill, yes but it does look very nice.;)

efhughes3 08-27-2005 03:08 PM

I'll let you know Bill. I'm putting on a set of four 993 calipers, and I thought I'd run these pads on the street to see how they do.

Bill Verburg 08-27-2005 03:37 PM

Must be high tech pads
this is how Pagid RS 14s come
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125185814.jpg

They also look small for 993 pads, maybe an optical illusion from the box

Is that a bottle opener at the ready? ;)

Good eyes! I've got all of my important tools hanging on the bench for quick access.

I always wonder if packaging like that is to make us feel better when we realize that we likely paid retail around X (put your guess in here; mine is 6) times the manufacturing cost.

bkcbuilder 08-27-2005 03:57 PM

Overkill...maybe, but I bet you don't realize some of the hidden economies that are at work here. I was in a box plant out of college...made it all the way to plant manager before I left for a life as a General Contractor. There are trade shows for packaging, magazines, industy news letters, industry awards for best design, blah, blah, blah...they employ tens of thousands, whos only job it is , is to make the product you buy stand out among the crowd no matter how big a piece of cow flop it really is. Marketing, marketing, marketing.........

Is that a bootleg photocopied bentley?

Don't worry, your secret is safe ;)

That's pretty funny. Actually, I did buy the book, but the binding started letting clumps of pages go, so I got smart and put them in a binder. Actually, it lays open better. Trust me, it would be worth every penny to buy this book and not spend 1/2 a day copying!!

BHP - "Does it all, track and street"

Really.

Craig: Notice above I said I'm going to run these on the street. I've got Pagids for the track. What's the issue with trying them out?

There's no conflict of interest in your statement, is there?

jtratza 08-27-2005 08:13 PM

You should see the packaging for Campagnolo bike components. Looks like crown jewels. At the cost I guess they are.

austin552 08-27-2005 08:17 PM

No, that box looks right at home on that bench.

Dutchie 08-27-2005 08:29 PM

are you a surgeon Ed ? that must be the cleanest workbench i saw ever ;) Please post pics of the 993 brake upgrade.

Cheers,

HardDrive 08-27-2005 09:10 PM

LOL. I was going to say the same thing. Your workshop is so clean and organized, its a bit scary.

jpahemi 08-27-2005 09:20 PM

Ed:
What type of rotor hat are you using? What size rotor?
Regards,
j.p.

efhughes3 08-28-2005 04:11 AM

After having surgery on my left arm, a new bench was my first project-hence the cleanliness.

I got the hats from Dave @ Pro Braking. The rotors are about 32mm X 309mm for the front, stock Carrera on the rear with 993 calipers all around.

Craig: That statement has been bugging me for some reason. I don't think that BHP has made any outrageous claims. The bottom paragraph here simply states these as being a performance pad for street apps, and more than sufficient for club events/non-slick tires/agressive track use. Heck, I had stock brakes with Mintex pads doing (trying) all of the above.
