I have the following ad in the "for sale" section.

87 930 w/salvage title FS

Per the rules, everyone is keeping their opinions to themselves and out of the thread, and I appreciate that. But without a single offer or PM, I would like to get some honest feedback about the value of the car. I am well aware of the resale nature of salvage cars, but I could sure use some realistic guidance. Perhaps there are unanswered questions in the ad?

It has only been up a day or two, but any constructive criticism is appreciated. Thank you.

I'm not really in the market for 930s, but people tend to run screaming from salvage titles. Maybe some paperwork, both on the extent of the damage as to how it got the salvage title in the first place, and your mods, as well as an inspection by a qualified mechanic? Show people it wasn't that bad to begin with, you purtied it up, and it checks out great - should ameliorate the situation somewhat. Seems nice from where I sit.

Well, I have to say, the ad caught my eye. I am not in the market for a car, but if I were, this would be a candidate. Like others, I would balk at the salvage title too. You had a good explanation on the timing of the theft recovery in one of your posts. I had the same thoughts that were put to you on the relatively minor damage resulting in a salvage title. These cars don't sell in a weekend. Sometimes it takes several weeks, if not months. I think the price is good, and should catch some serious consideration. The car is beautiful and should get some interest. Be sure to include the local PCA people - I believe that's how you found it when you bought it.

I think that car's a beauty, and if I were in the market (or you were looking for a trade) I'd step up to the plate. Personally the salvage title wouldn't worry me too much, because I wouldn't plan on selling it, but like you said, you never know when life will throw you a curveball.

All I can offer:

A very good friend purchased his 930 about 8 months ago. It was the local wrench's car for the last 6 months or so. My friend knows every previous owner but not necessarily all the history.

The car is an '89 so it has the 5 speed. Some minor though not perfect bodywork on a fender and opposite side door. No accidents from what we could tell. Probably just minor ding repair. Excellent paint overall with just a very few tiny stone chips. I'd say less than 5. So paint overall 9.5/10. Interior shows just as sharp. Car was very original, no mods. Runs very, very strong. At time of purchase about 69K miles. Color is Slate Black metallic (charcoal grey) with Burgundy interior. Selling price was $34K. Hopes this helps.

Good idea to repost here.
There are a lot of owners who are posting adds for cars which will rarely sell because they off base so to speak- may be the price/style of add or whatever. But since the sticky for no comments everyone is zip lipped for fear of offending the owner or abusing this board.

I havebeem watching 930 prices for the past year or so, however our 1st baby is looming into view, so extra cars are now even more of a luxury (I already have 2 in storage).

As craig said price at 25-26 and it would sell fast.
And/Or get reputable mechanic reports indicating condition of car and rule out any question of there being defects.

I too saw an 89 5spd 60K miles with K27, fuel enrichment and aftermarket intercooker, Fiske 17" wheels etc and its price dropped from $36K to $33K before it sold.

Your car if clear title would be a $30K car but with title issues I feel may need to be cheaper.

However I may be wrong and you may get your price.

It looks a nice car- hang on to it!

Thank you everyone for your feedback! I would probably let the car go for $26k but figured that everyone likes to haggle. If I advertised it for $26k people would want it for $23k. So If figured I would start at $30k.

No big deal if it doesn't sell. I'll just say screw it and mod away. Twin plug, EFI, cams etc...

List it for what you want out of the car and don't budge on the price. That is what I have always done. When a potential buyer trys to haggle, I politely tell them that I set the car at a fair price and that is what I want out of it. A knowledgeable party will know what is a fair price. By the way I am lusting for your car and wondering how much someone might buy my 911 for.

The salvage title would bother me a little but after reading how minimal it was (broken window, stereo theft and the time lag) it seems like your price is still reasnoble. $26K would be a hell of a deal.

Can you document that the only the window was broken and the stereo stolen? Just curious where that information comes from? If I were a buyer, word of mouth would seem sketchy at best.

My recent experience is that most folks fear the unknown of a salvage title. I've had a 96 355 on autoweek for 68,000 which is fair. The car drives and handles great. Paint is not perfect but itsa at least a 10ft/10mph looker. The interior is impeccable. Got a lot of phone calls on it. Some with great interest even though everyone that called was told up front that it was a salvage title. It was up on Ebay and it got up to 53,000 with a 60,000 reserve. Lots of bids but most were low balls. Only two folks were seriously bidding.

I too saw you ad and have been actively looking for a 930. The only thing that made me think twice (and I am being honest and trying not to be insulting) was the fact that I find hard to believe a car of that value with a missing stereo and a broken window would be considered by and Ins Co a total loss hence a salvage. I can understand if the whole interior was missing but again who know why Inc Co do what they do.

DW SD I cannot provide documentation. I only have the word of mouth of the previous owner. Just being honest. Knowing this, I had a PPI done which backed up the claim, down to he tiny piece of broken glass they found under the seat. There is also a mark on the window frame.

No offense taken. And I am the one who asked for the feedback, so bash away! If there was more damage done, I did not find it. The previous owner indicated that by the time the car was recovered, the insurance company had already decided it never would be and declared it a total loss.

A salvage title with no doumentation would bother me as well, unless I got a really, really good deal. Perhaps the insurance company can provide.

Say someone did buy this 930 (BTW, hellava deal @ $26K, IMO).
Would that person have any trouble insuring it? I mean what's Bluebook on it and what's the difference in the salvage title value?

Would it be negligible since the car is almost 20 years old? Just curious....

If I were to buy this 930, I would not be afraid to DE/track it due to it's salvage title. I'd never get the purchase price back anyway.

I would suggest advertise in/at various places. Your buyer is out there, let him find the car FS.

One of the things that seems to put buyers mind at ease is to list some reference sells to justify the price. You don't have to put them on the post, but provide them for potential buyers. If they see comprable clear title cars going for 30-35K it will help put into perspective the dicount for the salvage title. It seems everyone in this thread would take the car for $26 if they were in the market, but we are all educated buyers. Just try to point your potential buyers in the direction of some unbiased information.

Doesn't the insurance company have 30 days to settle a claim? So had the car been recovered in less than 30 days it would not have been a salvage. Just another avenue.
