Carrera A/C Removal - Compressor bracket ?

For the bracket the extends into the engine compartment and bolts to the top of the engine shroud with two studs is it necessary to replace Put back on) the nuts on these or just leave the studs with no nuts?

One of the studs on mine was stripped out and I had to work over the studd a bit - hence getting the nut back on is a non starter. I thought about just removing the stud all together - I assume these hold on the engine shroud (fiberglass)

Thoughts?

-Jeff

Jeff, I put the two nuts back on FWIW. If it were me, and one of the bolts was stripped, then I wouldn't worry about it. IMO, missing one of the nuts holding the shroud on is a non-issue.

So they do in fact hold the shroud down? They just looked really close to the intake runners - didn't want to cause any issues there..

I don't know if I'd go that far... I mean, the shroud isn't going to budge with or without them, but since the bolts DO pass through the shroud, with the nuts on top, then I guess they do assist with 'holding the shroud down'. I sure wouldn't worry about one of those nuts not being on. I don't know, but do those two bolts even exist on the pre-Carreras?

There are thick washers with the bolts - then the bracket - the washers hold the shroud down - and I would make sure you keep the shroud firmly attached to make sure you get as much air going through to cool the engine (good) vs escaping on the top (bad).

Jeremy's certainly correct about keeping the shroud firmly attached. I'm not disagreeing with that at all...it's just that imo, the shroud IS firmly attached, whether neither or both of those nuts are on there. Ideally, of course you'd like to have them both, but I'm of the opinion that missing one nut (the second nut is just a few inches away), isn't going to effect the shroud (or air flow) at all.

I think you would be able to replace these studs pretty easily- Try grabbing them with a pair of vice grips. Mine came off pretty easily without heat.

And I'm not disagreeing with Keith either. I tend to over do it (see engine rebuild) - but they do serve a purpose in keeping the shroud planted on the right side (otherwise why would the factory include a set of fancy washers?).

I went the vice grip route and got no love. Heat would melt the shroud? I mean there is no real way to heat that stud enough without causing damage to the shroud...

The whole problem started when the nut just spun on the stud without moving - the stud was not turning but the nut just kept turning and turning...so out comes the dremel cut the nut in half chisel off the nut and get the bracket.

What I am left with is a mangled stud - so I tried vice grips and it did not budge. Really just working with a nub of a stud at this point. Ideally I would like to get it out - replace with the washer and another nut. Any other ideas on extraction??

Can you retap it? anything there? Otherwise - as KC said - might not be worth it. Pretty sure it's M6 x 1mm

Well - if I can re-tap this booger I should quit my day job. I would rather extract it and put in another stud.

I rounded and stripped the threads on one of the head studs - So I dremeled the stud square - then stuck on the biggest set of vice grips I had with the greatest amount of force. Then I backed the stud out.

If you're going to go that route, you might try spraying a bit of PB Blaster, etc. in there, then as Jeremy said, use the biggest vice grips that you can get on there (how much of the bolt is still protruding above the shroud?) w/ a GOOD grip. An alternative might be a smaller set of vice grips, but using a section of pipe (slid over the vg handle) to assist w/ leverage. Good luck!
