Differences between 1974 Carerra RSR's

For my first 911 project, I am considering building a 1974 RSR clone (body and paint important but mechanics and interior not) out a 74+ 911.

From the research I've done thus far it seems like there were different body styles for the 1974 RSR. Some have the wide, vented rear flares and some don't:

Can anyone shed any light here. I was also wondering if the year 911 to start with made a difference (1974-1989).

Anyone have a documented build up online?

Thanks-
Craig

I just went back and researched a little more and realized the 1974 RSR had the vented flares and 1974 3.0 RS didn't.

I'm wondering what the difference between the bodies of the 1974 RS 3.0 and IROC are? They look similiar.

The base RSR's and Carrera 3.0RS had the same sized flares as the 930 i.e 9 & 11"

The vented flares are an additional 2" each i.e 11 & 13"

Yep, what Bill said. So, the only visual differences would appear to be that IROC cars had completely fiberglass tails and black headlight rings, whereas the 3.0RS's had a rubber lip tail, and body-color headlight rings. Also, the IROC cars had the "Porsche" side script, and the 3.0RS had the "Carrera" side script.

The '74 RSRs used 10.5" & 14" center-lock wheels that would be virtually impossible to get for a replica ... or prohibitably expensive!

The IROC cars were RS 3.0 bodied cars with early-development high-butterfly 3.0 RSR engine of 315 hp output, and 9" & 11" Fuchs from the '73 RSRs. All 15 were sold off by Penske after the first IROC series ended. Most were raced for several seasons ...

I think the rear lens treatment was different on the IROC cars vs. the Carrera/RSR. The IROC cars also ran Fuchs. FWIW, the IROC cars originally shipped with a ducktail, but the other wing was added after testing.

There was a thread on here that had some pictures of actual IROC cars. If you find it there could be some good pics for you to go off of. Sorry I cannot help anymore. I will do a search and see if I can find it, doubtful.

our interpretation using turbo flares< this car was for sale again recently on e bayhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125434256.jpg

Yep, the IROC center reflector should just be a blank, body color panel with the "Porsche" script.

fastbacker 08-30-2005 12:45 PM

What would it take to turn a 1976 Turbo body into a 1974 Carerra RS 3.0 (I know the shape of the flares are slightly different)? Is it just the bumpers and tail that are different?

Thank you-
Craig

bumpers, tail, reflector- put a piece of body colored vinyl over it, wheels, rear view mirror

IROC

RS 3.0

RS 3.0 Interior, at least that is how I labeled the pic when I saved it I could be wrong about this one though.

And Finally a little touch of uniqueness that I have an affinity for is an IROC radio delete plate (I think). Though it is not in an IROC in this picture If you find one let me know where you found it because I would be interested.

Right you are, in all the ones I have seen, I was just going through Starkeys 911 R-RS-RSR and quoted him. Should have cought that.

What was in place of the reflector on 1974 RS3.0 - was it a metal piece?

Thanks again-

Craig

when i was crusin' the various porsche shops after school back in '75, AIR had a really nicely fabricated aluminum reflector replacement that he gave me. I am not sure, but this could have been what the iroc's used.- It was too nicely made , but not really lighter than the plastic reflector- sure much sturdier!
Whenever we make a replica we either start with a scratched up reflector, prep and paint to match the body- or if easy to match to existing vinyl, we lay bulk sticker material over it , then the Porsche graphic
