911 in Katrina

I live 100 miles north of Gulfport. Katrina's eye went over my house, wind speed got to 120 mph. I had to be at the hospital the following day, but gasoline is very hard to get. My regular new car (a 2005 Mustang GT) had only 1/2 tank and 100 miles left to empty. So I trotted out my 19 yr old 911, 3/4 tank, and have been traveling through debris to the hospital and town constantly. The car has been a lifesaver.

It's great you survived so well. With all the talk about NO, it's hard for some to remember Mississippi got the main hit.

I hope gas and other services get back to normal soon for you!

With a couple of pics, that will be a story to tell the grandkids (assuming you don't have any now). Maybe you can shoot us a pic of what your drive route looks like.

Thank you Milt, you helped me about a year ago with a steering problem.

I will post a pic when I get home from the hospital.

Joe, who is your mechanic? Is it Howard in Gulfport, he told me he had recently serviced a doctor's car in Hattisburg.

Howard Breland IS my mechanic.

He was going to move his operation to Meridian, but has not as of last week. He told a friend of mine who just got a 87 911 Turbo he would be ready in Meridian in September, but that was before the hurricane and his shop was still in Gulfport when Katrina hit. No one I know has talked to him, but I am sure he evacuated from his Gulfport shop as it easily floods.

I know you all are only seeing New Orleans in the news, but the Mississippi Gulf coast looks like a nuclear bomb went off. I know that thousands are dead in Mississippi and the media has been kept in the dark on the numbers.

I can tell you with that there are over 1000 dead in Hancock County alone.

The media is not telling everything.

No pics, Howard might have some, it was cut short as everyone from the coast had to scurry b/c of the storm. His shop is ok, some roof damage. He went and got his tools and has just about given up Gulfport. He said he felt like he just returned from a journey to Mars. He will be there for the next few days, packing and cleaning up where he lives, it only had fallen trees. He is thinking about doing some storm cleanup work as he was essentially knocked out of business. He has lined up some heavy equipment and is going to put out some feelers to see if he can do something. I may go down there next week and help him some, if I can get GAS!

Joe, that is what I have heard about the deaths. BTW, it is Freeman, not Breland. I spoke to your friend the other day about his Turbo cab, it sounds nice. Maybe we can meet in Meridian some day, it sounds like it may be sooner rather than later.

John,
I am glad to hear he is Ok, i tryed to call a few time with no luck.
I have been to South La and back a few time to bring fuel and water to friends and family. I know it is a mess.
As for fuel, I have not had any problems over here on the eastern shore. If you what call me before you head down , and maybe I can help with the fuel problem.

Thanks

No Speedy Oil any more. Lots of damage, lots of homes and lives lost.

We WILL recover though.
