the amazing "long" shifter
now why hasn't anyone done this? of course, now that the cat is out of the bag, there are bound to be clones.
do you 6'4" guys ever get tired of leaning forward every time you shift into 1st/3rd/5th? i know i did. a simple 3" extension of the stock handle converts your shifter into a comfortable AND easier to shift custom unit. easier because the fulcrum point has been lengthened. you can just lay back in the seat, nicely reclined, seat all the way back to the stop, and shift like you always wanted to. the knob travel is not really that big a deal. not a whole lot more than stock, and if you want a bit less travel, just use the extension on a factory short shifter, or convert your miserably firm short shifter that you wish could be easier to shift. i'm not selling them, but they're not difficult to make. you scoff now, but once you try it, you'll never go back. i also heated the handle just below the top of the boot and bent the handle back to the perfect position. impress your friends and terrify your enemies! bound to be as popular as the awesome island valve adjust tool, which i heard is back in production. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1126221233.jpg |
swimming against the current...
|
hmm.. reminds me of a video circulating the internet recently which involved a young lady and a shifter.
I think your conversion would bring tears to her eyes!;) |
(swimming against the current....)
it's my nature. |
Do you get any "backdate" points for this?
|
John, that reminds me of the shifter on a VW bus, but then you're probably used to those... :-)

beat me to it.

I have something like this in my VW buses. |
easier because the fulcrum point has been lengthened
So, just how much do you net on a 915 rebuild? |
it ain't gonna hurt 'em.
|
So if I put a long shifter on a short shift kit in a mid-year car...I think it's all gonna cancel out.
I'm going to make one anyway. Thanks, John! That's a great idea. |
I seem to recall seeing some sort of tall shifter in a Porsche factory race car, might have been a rally car or something, can't remember.

i had a 63 vw pickup outfitted with a 3.2 and 915 that had a 915 shifter about 2 1/2' long. i did it on a short shifter to compensate for the length. the travel wasn't too bad, for a bus. |
Ditto link.

Try something like. . . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1126225489.jpg hehehehehe |
My shift knob is only on by about a half inch so in effect it extended the shift arm about 1.5 inches. I like it.
|
i would be happy with an inch and a half extension, but three would be better, and i'm sure there would be a lot of compliments.
|
Did a similar thing to a clients 77 Turbo, his wife was leaving her right harness loose so that she could shift. About 2 1/2 inches did the trick.
Chris, you were correct, it was Turbo rally car. Damn cool video.... |

i was sent "IT" as a wmv attachment. if someone wants me to send it to them- i need your e mail address so you can post it as a link. i dunno how
btw- it most definitely breaks the posting rules here so..... |
Really, I don't think John will mind if this gets moved to overtime.

If you did happen to be making one I'd take a 2" one. 3" seems a bit much and I am only 6'2". |

i cut 3" off an old shift handle from the box o' shifters then made a 2" slug with a very slight press fit, out of some steel rod, squeezed it in 1/2 way with a vise, then filed the protruding end of the slug so it could be lightly tapped into the old shift handle, kind of snug like, and JB'd it in. reinstall your old knob with the crush sleeve, and that's it. anyone can do it.

Good for you John !
The key sentence being - 'why havn´t anyone thought of this'. I had the same thought at work a few years ago about a medical device. Designed and patented a urine collection bag for small children (that actually work). About to sell it to a large American pharmaceutical company. Will make a bundle. Now, should I go with a CGT or a Koenigsegg.. Decisions, decisions..;) |
I want one. Maybe I'll dig through my box O'shifters this weekend. ;)
Hay wait a minute, I just remebmered I run a complete machine shop. Cool, that might make it easier and I can call it "billet" and claim it's worth 100 times more than it really is ;) |
Now you are understanding marketing Sammy - call it "custom billett" and charge 2x again for it...
Like I've seen anything come out of a machine shop that wasn't custom... |

Double Post.

I've been searching for a knob that has the extension built into it - or at least 1/2" taller than stock, anything would help. I'm only 5'-5" but have short arms and do find myself leaning forward a bit to shift.
