Need a 73 911 Gas Tank

After finding a lot of rust in the bottom of my tank was the main reason the all the fuel lines were bone dry I figure a new one is the best way to go.

Pelican Parts does not show that they sell them so does anyone know where I can get an OEM or reproduction tank and if so, will the fit and finish be as good as original?

Thanks,

Tim G.

I believe Performance Products is now selling galvanized reproduction tanks.

I've got an OEM one from my '73 for sale.

I'm in CT so delivery would be no problem.

Let me know.

Tom,

I may have found a used one from Shaun who is on this list. The tank is also in CT but he has not contacted me as of yet.

If I don't hear from him soon I'll get back to you. I really need it for this Saturday.

Where are you located in CT and how much do you want for it.

Thanks,

Tim G.

I had the same questions you had on quality and fit of the repros.

If you go the repro route be prepared to be out on a waiting list. I waited around 4 months to get mine from Performance products. I have no complaints on the tank itself. It was cheaper than sending it away to be restored. I would have used Pelican but they don’t carry them.

It seems my original was heavier than the repro, but it might have been ages of undercoating. I do think my fittings were more beefy than the repro. Still…galvanized! The fit is perfect. I had problems with my fuel sender previously and still do, I can’t say there’s a problem there. I found I had to shorten my fuel sender to get it to fit.

If you go this route it comes in a big corrugated box and is bare metal. I covered mine with undercoating. Leave a good 5 inches clean on the filling tube for the connecting sleeve. Any suggestions on any other treatment are welcome.

You’ll need to order the black foam strip that goes between the tank and the trunk separately. Plus get a new tank filter for $10.00 from Pelican. Warning…make sure your fittings are tight before you install. I had a very tiny fuel drip that just left a gas droplet on my tank but not enough to drip on the garage floor. It eventually stopped on it’s own. I could not get into that tiny space to tighten that recessed fitting.

You can install this in a few hours with a helper. I’ve had zero problems since the install.

Wayne always says he can get anything Perf. has - so you may want to call and see.

I'd look into a plastic one also.

Hey guy's,

Shaun got back to me and said his was available for the asking so I'm gonna go that route.

Doug, thanks for all that info. I'm gonna prep it saturday then install it sunday and if all goes well I may finally have it running.

Tim? Let us know how this saga ends up, okay? I'll confess, I love these ongoing stories of problems & how/when they get solved.

Ok,

today Chris Bennet and I installed the tank I got from Shaun and the only problem we had was we forgot to be carefull not to break the return line fuel stem that is attached on the tank.

On this tank it is attached by a banjo bolt fitting much like an oil line. Since Chris has just about every piece of hardware needed for a 911 this was not one of his stock items so he took a TimeCert and threaded it into the tank. Then we used an old oil line and cut off the end (banjo bolt fitting) with about 2 inches of hard line attached and it worked like new!

My original tank simply had 2 hard lines coming out of the tank. It appears they are not removable so that's why we went the other route.

We finally put 2 gallons of gas in and let the fuel pump run a bit before starting but still had no luck. It still won't start.

The car came original with CIS, I replaced the fuel pump with one for carbs (low pressure) but did not change the fuel filter.

Would this filter set up for CIS slow down the fuel flow from a low pressure pump enough to starve the motor?

Thanks,

Tim G.
