brake hardline sizes?
i know i've asked this before but now for the life of me i cannot retrieve it w/ a search. I'm trying to purchase them from a local automotive store
what is the thread size for brake hardlines? Is there a SAE equivalent or a definitive metric size? What about the flare? Do they have the correct bubble flare or should I just grab whatever they have? thanks. |

Dave;
When I replaced my hard lines, I used the standard metric tubing from Autozone. In my case I was combining it with a custom dual master set-up, so I used a double flare tool or single flare tool as appropriate depending on the fitting required. The piece of un-cut tubing that I have has double-flares on it.

The ones I get up here are denoted as metric "C" if that helps. Take and old one with you so you can see the flair.
John, what MC did you use? Jeff

I want to double check the 10x1.00 spec. it's been bothering me since I posted, and my memory isn't what it once was.

Bill, is that true for "all" years? Actually, I'm going to be mounting 993 calipers on my '84.

Should be, it is the same size that is on my Brembos as well. It was also the same size fitted to the boxster calipers....

let me add that most auto stores carry two - one with a little more thread than the other. The one with less thread fit a little better on my 993 brakes

The fittings on all the calipers are M10x1 but as mentioned there are long and short versions.
the 993s do use the same fittings but the brake lines are bigger, from memory 5 or 6mm

Not necessarily, the larger 993 lines do offer some slight advantages when the entire system is plumbed w/ them, but the older cars are still limited by the 3/16" chassis lines. Putting bigger lines for a short stretch offers no advantage.

Smart racing makes a real nice unit that is less expensive which is designed for cars which originally had power brakes. It can be used in a non-power brakes car, but some cutting of the footwell is required. This unit fit in with no cutting required. I've been happy with it.

The SRP one (made by Fabcar) fit into my 84 with no cutting. However it interferes with the HVAC plunbing in a big way!
Thanks,
