Paint Restoration?
Apologies in advance if this has already been discussed but I did a search and couldn't find it. My car has pretty decent paint, I would say 8/10 with 2 points off for a few scratches, rock dings, and a poorly resprayed hood. The car is the original color and I want to keep it that way.
My question is this, is there a way to improve the look of the hood without respraying the car? The hood is a good color match, but has some orange peel on it and just won't shine up like the other panels. Can I just buff this out and see how it goes? Also, with the scratches and rock dings, I am thinking of getting some touchup paint from Porsche and then polishing it after it's dry to smooth out the edges. Is this the correct method? Thanks.

84 Targa, nice.
Try some clay, a lot of places sell it. DON"T use a hand polsih compoud or scratch remover with a machine buffer, they have different lubricants and you'll burn the paint. No expert here, just my $0.02.

Rick:
Clay will help remove surface imperfections and make the paint smooth, but if the paint itself is bad clay really won't help improve the shine. In other words, you'll end up with really smooth bad looking paint! ![]() Check out www.properautocare.com. Jan and Terry Frieberg own the company, and they're very helpful. If you call them they'll guide you to the correct products. (No relationship other than being a satisfied customer.) If the orange peel is really bad, you might have to color sand and then buff it out. I'd try less aggressive techniques first, and leave color sanding as a last resort. One thing to consider is the Porter Cable polisher. It's virtually idiot-proof (ask me how I know) and works great. PM or e-mail me for me info. As to the little scratches and dings, don't bother with Porsche. You can likely get what you need at www.paintscratch.com. There are lots of threads about the best way to touch up paint. Do a search here and elsewhere on the 'net and you'll find lots of different techniques for touch-up. Post before and after pics when you're done. Good luck!
