Selling a car - Q's

I have not sold a car in a long time, and there is the very real likelihood that the buyer will be from out of town or country. With multiple folks interested, what is the best way to handle the multiple interests? I have the car listed as price OBO, but do not want to turn this into a nasty finger pointing bid-off. Or is that what I should want? What is the expected business practice on my part? As far as payment and helping with shipping, do I wait for a bankdraft etc...then sign over and overnight the title? Would appreciate any help you can give.

Chris

Bottom line: cash talks, BS walks.

You may have alot of people contact you, but the 'dropoff rate' to actually seeing or inspecting the car can be huge (100% for most cars I've put on Pelican).

When you get an acceptable offer and take a deposit, let everyone know. Anyone coming along later with a higher offer has to wait in the hopes that the accepted offer will fall through. Take a substantial deposit and try todo it unconditionally and as "nonrefundable." That will separate the men from the boys quickly.

A buyer requiring a PPI is more trouble than an "I'll take it" type. You need to make the appointment, transport the car and trust the shop to do it right. Meantime, the clock is ticking on other potential buyers, so time is of the essence. Lots of people who are 'ready to buy' are looking at 2-3 cars. So this week's buyer might not be there next week.

The title never gets signed off until all the money is (irrevocably) in hand. There are forged cashiers checks, money orders, etc. Even wire transfers can be 'reversed' by your bank up to 2 weeks later.

I deal with cash or cashier's check from a 'big five' bank only.

Overseas buyers are, in my experience, more reliable than domestic buyers, but they have all kinds of other concerns that make dealing with them worth a premium. Shippers are out there to help you, though.

I think the OBO stuff is not to your advantage. If you want to do that just list the car on ebay. I think by not naming a price you lose a lot of potential buyers. Do your research, name your price, and then take offers. I think it's better to at least name a price that is on the high side rather than just OBO.

And as previously mentioned, once you accept an offer keep your word and follow through even if you receive a higher offer in the meantime.

You'll have plenty of offers from clients overseas as well please don't bother with them as they are full of ****,remember if it's too good to be true it probably is

Leverage an offer against others, if you can. If I had two to three interested parties, I would recommend after receiving an offer that you update the others and see if they can "step up". One offer can be leveraged into other, better ones. That said, you have to be fair to the buyers and cannot accept an offer and then "shop it", either. If you are straightforward and are fair, you should be able to end up with the best deal for you.
Good luck!

I have sold 2 Porsches to "overseas buyers"....one from Italy & one from Belgium....BUT !!! these gentleman came right to my house, inspected the cars, & paid me in real C notes ($100 bills)...then arranged themselves, to get the cars shipped home. Both transactions were flawless. I think any really serious "overseas" buyer is overHERE looking at, & ready to buy his chosen Porsche. I wouldn't mess with a long distance transaction unless the cash came first. I live on the west coast & bought a 356 from New Jersey...sent the $$$ & Sunday Transport picked up the car & delivered it to me...that's the only way I would sell one, too. Best is the man in front of you with cash ready to take it as is where is....

Good Luck

I'm looking at doing the opposite - I'm in NJ, buying a car on the west coast. How do you xfer the funds across country and be sure you get a car loaded on the car carrier?

I'm on the same boat...
I've accepted an offer for my targa, he's wireing a deposit to hold the car. I had the car PPI'd by his request and have been in the negotiation mode for the last week as to what the car comes with. What should be the next step to be fair with both parties in mind?
He's trying to set up delivery to the east coast in a week or so. I was thinking of sending him a bill of sale and the title and have the balance of the money wired on day of pick up from my home.
It sounds like from earlier posts I should request the money to be paid in full before I sign off on the title.
Does this seem to risky

I'm sure you could use an escrow service, but that costs $$$. Do any of the car carriers (DAS) capable of giving funds to the seller upon pickup? Probalby wishful thinking on my part...

I would ask the mechanic that does the PPI to act as escrow agent. He releases the car & title when the funds clear. Hopefully it is someone you can both trust.
