Unhappy NC Fails Me!!

Well - finally took the "new" 84 to get inspected. I've had it since February - but the inspection was not a priority. Should have waited another 5 months to age out - as it failed the emmissions test. I've got a SW chip in it so I'm not sure if this is a simple adjustment or what. Any recomendations? Can I adjust myself? I've got two weeks!

Mike

How long does NC require you to smog a car. Just wondering about your reference to "age out". Thanks

Moving to GSO in about a month or so, what's the deal with NC inspections and emissions? I have an 82SC that has been registered in Fla. Thanks

Mike,

Did you get it passed? Put the factory chip back in and you are good to go, same thing needed in California.

Older cars do not require inspection in NC. I thought they had to be 30+ years old though.

I thought all you needed was a saefty inspection not a smog check. That's all that required in Cumberland county.

Depends on the county registered in.
Thank God I aged out! Safety inspection only for me.

For counties that where non emission prior to Jan 1 2004 all cars that are 1994 or older are exempt from a "emissions" test. Cars 1995 or newer must pass an ODBII based test.

Cars that are located in counties that where emission prior to Jan 1 2004 must still pass a sniffer test until 2005 or 2006 (sorry I forget) At which point they will no longer be emissions tested.

All cars must pass a safety inspections and a visual emissions equipment inspection.

Before the above took place NC was 25 years and out and you can get a waiver if you can show the parts are no longer available. There is also a dollar threshold that can be used to get a waiver (doesn't include replacing required missing components)

I just went thru this with my 87 so you might want to read thru this thread just in case it might apply to you too.

I failed smog :(

I finally passed.
If you post a pic of your test results, somone here can probably steer you in the right direct.

Never got it passed. I took it back three times after my wrench made CO adjustments (final reading was 3.19) and idle adjustments - with no luck. Thought about swapping the chip but the spare chip is a Welmiester performance chip - not the original. Anyhow it became such a d*#m hassle I just gave up. If I make it to January 1 without a ticket I'm home free! I'm banking that NCHP are so focused on those Al Reid polished Fuchs they won't be looking for a windshield sticker!

Where are you getting the car inspected? I had some issues with inspection at prior service place that I no longer do business with. They were trying to tell me it was this that and the other thing ($$$$). It ended up being the ECU which is not cheap. They would have done all the this that and the other thing and I would still have a bad ECU. My current shop is top notch with these cars (in my own opinion) w/out taking advantage of you. Location is Raleigh. Let me know if you need their name. Prior shop is not recommended by me.

As of 1/1/2005 cars over 35 years old do not have to be inspected in NC.

I hope you make it, but I have to warn you that when I have been late on my inspections in the past, about 60 days after the inspection date has passed, the State sends you a letter giving you a couple of weeks to provide proof of passing inspection, or face a stiff fine and revocation of your license plate.

Another alternative is to turn the plate in to the DMV, then re-license it in January. If you have turned the plate in, the inspection is not required. I did this for a truck that I had pulled the running gear out to rebuild. I turned the plate in and told the DMV that I had the vehicle under "restoration" and it was not drivable, but would remain registered in NC. When I re-licensed it in January, 2005, it was more than 25 years old and required only a safety inspection.

If you have some major work you want to do to your Porsche, this is an alternative.

If you are currently in an emissions county and are required to have an emissions inspection (Shouldn't affect any care older than 1996 now) you will be sent notification that you must prove the car has been inspected or receive a $250 fine plus intrest

Or do as wholberg suggests

Guys:

Starting on Jan 1 of 2006, NC will only be performing emissions inspections on 1994 and NEWER cars. I was going to register my race car but knew it wouldn't pass inspection.

So, Inspector Boanes from the local DMV in Concord came over and told me to wait until Jan 1. They are only going to inspect cars with OBD systems on them.

So just hang out and lay low until then, unregister the car if necessary if it won't pass. Then January 2nd, walk in register it, and go get a safety inspection.

Brian
