ok.. In NW Nevada is Sheldon Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. At the border with Oregun is a small town called Denio. Hy 140 starts there and heads west thru the Refuge. The pic was taken 20mi west of Denio. The area is loaded with burrows, wild horses, reindeer, etc. The timing of the season is important as the tourists chase the wildlife back away into the hills. The driving is beautiful thru that area. It's a bit undiscovered by most tourists, especially in early May, when the pic was shot. There is also an unmarked opel mine in there on an unmarked road where you can walk a river for $40/day and hope to find your own opels. Hunting in the mine is $200/day. Pro class fly fishermen can be found fishing in that area also.

reindeer - only at Xmas! maybe you saw some pronghorn - their center of distribution is central Wyo. but there are a few in SE Oregon.

other interesting things in the area include mtns., playas, the smallest liquor store in the state, sage grouse, rare fish species, and hot springs

I thought it was deer till I was corrected.. it definately wasn't pronghorn. I'll look for hard info later if you're interested?

Often called antelope - but they aren't. In Wyo. often called goats. In fact. Antiolocapra americana (italicized) is the only species in its entire Family. The Family is genetically fairly close to the Caprids (goats). Antelope occur only in Africa and a group within the Bovidae Family - i.e. domestic cattle.... oxen etc.

Pronghorn are the fastest mammals in the world (for a middle distance runner). They refuse to jump over any kind of fence...

More than you wanted to know ... but I used to teach Mammalogy at U. Wyo. Undergrad. students got demerits if they called them antelope; grad. students who did that were executed...

it's med temp next to a large undeveloped campground that has the springs also plumbed into a couple of indoor showers. The showers run fixed on 24/7. No rd signs and no info that there is even a springs pool or campground there.
