Question '86 930...What should I pay?

I am looking at a black/black 930 with 45k miles in supposedly excellent condition, as proclaimed by a "consignment" guy. The pics look great other than the fuchs looking slightly faded. Interior pretty nice too. He says the owner wants $30k and had said no to an earlier offer of $28.5. I will of course go the PPI route should I get to that step, but generally, what would be a "fair" price for both me and him assuming the car does flying colors after PPI?

Thanks

I paid $27 for my 86 with 68k on it. Other than a couple of minor things it was perfect ( ok synchro is going in 2nd but who's isn't ??). Interior is like new, had custom wheels, momo steering wheel and security system . I think $30k is fair.. Black on black is the only way to go!!!

930's are hard to call. In perfect, concours shape, that 30 would be a deal. If it has issues, 20 would be just the gate fee. Are you a HP junky in the making? Are you looking to show? If you are going to mod, you may want to find one that already has the basic bolt-ons, and save yourself the $5K HP junky starter kit bill.

seems fair if it passes a ppi with flying colors, the mileage can be reasonably confirmed as accurate, and it has all original paint.

Thank you very much guys. I am interested in keeping the car stock and making it look like new. If I have to do a rebuild, then I'll be obligated to increase the HP significantly.

9d- Indeed, black is the way to go. White is nice too!

David-Thanks

Socal- Original paint. I'm not sure about the miles--Will the carfax provide this info?

Regards,
Curt

For the miles, carfax will give you some clues, but you have to make a determination based on the service records and the overall condition of the car.

Here's a black/tan `86 930 with 18.5k miles in NY that may be worth checking out:

I found a one owner 79 with 12,000 miles everything original last summer for 29,900 but it was a custom color that I did not like. The price was great for a truly original low mile car but you have to live with the color and no matter how great a price just could not get past the color.

Boxster- I too found a beautiful '79 w/ low miles (blue with neon blue interior). Selling for $29 too. I finally realized that the interior color would be too much of a burden to live with. Yeccchh!

Eric- I emailed the seller and got zero response, plus its too late to question it with only 5 hours left. Thanks for the heads-up!

$30K sounds fair - that's what I think mine is worth. (Mine has 135K on original engine. Paint, leather, and overall condition is excellent - mine has always been garaged in CA. It is mechanically in nearly perfect shape - except it needs an A/C charge...)

Get receipts for everything. How new is the turbo? How new is the clutch? A "deal" on a 930 can be painful if you don't ask the right questions!

E- I agree with you. I can see what a hassle it is when ownership is nothing more than continuous, serial repairs. We'll see how she looks.
Thanks

If you have 30k and you love the car then buy and be happy. I have been seeing the price fall the last couple of weeks. My friend just picked up a bad ass 86 930 built Black/Black with over 70k in the last year for 27k. He was asking 40k for a couple of months.

I have to ask this; What did a 930 sell for new in 1986?? This may be the highest retained value of any car for 20 years...

WOW !!

(30/48) /20= 3.1% per year, ($1500/year)

Note: Most European luxury sedans lose about 50% of their value in 5 years, as a point of reference.. That is good for production cars, most are worse.

It just doesn't get any better than that. How many 930s were sold in US in 1986??
