good/bad experiences buying used porsche 911 engines?

Just wanted to hear from people who have done this and if they were happy with their purchase or do they wish they had rebuilt what they already had.

thanks

Well I had one 3.6 shipped from CA to NY and Forward Air lost it. So, add that to your "bad experiences" list.

I bought an entire car from an insurance auction. Didn't hear it run, but by buying the whole car (wrecked in the front) it came with the Motronic brain, harness, yada yada. Lots of spare parts!

Worked out great.

I bought my 3.6 (through my mechanic) from a guy who wrecked his car at the track. I 've had it in now about a year with several DEs and it runs like top. No regrets

I bought a 2.2S a few years ago. I had the sellers mechanic do a (biased) PPI. I used the engine for 2 years then sold it for what I paid.

My buyers PPI showed low compression on 2 cylinders so I paid $1000 to have it fixed prior to sale. I was already well down the swap path and couldn't afford to lose my buyer.

The 3.2 I bought was rebuilt by a reputable shop. It lasted about 900 miles before starting to knock. The seller took it back, rebuilt it and I've been happy ever since.

In both cases I was upgrading though, so I didn't have the option of rebuilding what I had.

I'd say get some type of PPI or buy from a reputable source.

Like Dantilla, I bought a crashed car from auction. Other than being seriously crashed it was in beautiful condition with an obviously recently reconditioned engine and SSIs. So good experiance

Hee hee, and when I start to run out of money I just sell more bits off the car.
