"But CSFB recommended buying into weakness in Porsche shares, noting the deal made long-term strategic sense by securing production of the Cayenne and perhaps using spare VW capacity at some stage to make the four-door Porsche Panamera".
This makes sense to me.

I have three shares of Porsche and the latest price is still above what I paid for them last year. So I'm not sure it is much of a bargain even at these prices. However, I would certainly encourage all Pelicans to buy a couple of shares each so that we can march into Dr Weideking's office and demand he run a factory LMP1 car at LeMans with Pelican livery!

In general the acquiring company’s shares fall in any deal like this, so it’s no big deal. If the deal is truly a good one for Porsche it’s just a buying opportunity. You’d really have to dissect the deal in much greater detail or show blind faith in the management at Porsche.

Which implies that the "market" is inefficient and that Porsche "knows" better. The "market" basically implies that Porsche could have had better use for their resources, e.g. R&D. Now the Porsche stock will have the "portfolio effect" of VW & Porsche.

Do you really believe that the market is that efficient in these situations?

Efficient - The market reflects all stock info into the stock price. All the analysts/traders/insiders (friends of) seem to think in contrary to the Porsche Mgmt. Could they be considering other wasted mergers/buy-ins, e.g. M/B buy of Chyrsler? Bottom line: Only time will tell. Buy "puts" or write "calls".
