Transmission Choice

I'm looking for some advice on what to do from a transmission standpoint. I had a 1976 911S that turned out to be a little too rusty for me to bring back to life. So I purchased an 80SC to fill the void. So now I have 2 transmissions. I know the '76 is magnesium and it still has the 8:31 R&P, it has been stationary for 18 years but only has 50,000 miles on it, and was used gently. The 80sc, 77,000 miles, has an aluminum cased transmission and strengthened differentials, but it has some bad synchros. IE it will not shift into first moving, not something I practice but something the car will not do. Fifth is hard to find and second can be finiky too. Some of the problems could be repaired with new bushings I am sure. And the PO used it as a track car.

So I am left with two transmissions with seperate pro's and con's. Whichever transmission I choose will eventually (read whenever I make some scratch and can rebuild my engine) will be mated to a 3.2L engine.

What are your thoughts?

Rich,

What is your intended use and long term goals?

The best would be to take both transmissions and build one best from the two. It could have all the latest bits and pieces, geared the way you want, and all the features (oil pump, both speedometer outputs, LSD, etc.) The remains could be accurately documented and partially assembled to keep all the parts together for sale or future use.

Best,
Grady

Grady,

I am building primarily a street car, but would like to start doing DE's and the such in time. I don't know much of anything about transmissions, and am affraid of taking them apart. I've got the bentley manual and have been trying to absorb as much as I can. I have not considered adding LSD due to cost. Nor had I planned on putting an oil pump (for cooling?) on the transmission at this time. Is it something I should look into? Didn't 915's w/ 3.2's come with additional oil cooling? Right now I want a transmission that shifts smoothly and dependably. Longer term I am not sure what direction I am going to go. I've never been on a track, so I am not sure about whether or not I will get hooked by that bug or if I'll ever be able to afford being hooked by that bug.

And thanks for your help and advice.

Rich
