Oil cooler lines - alternatives?
I'm going through my suspension replacing everything and found an unexpected surprise (the best kind of surprises...I know).
One of the oil cooler lines was just about completely crushed at some point by a bonehead that jacked the car up. This is the hard oil line (not sure if supply or return) at the point where it runs under the factory chassis jacking point. The line is probably 75% restricted although it is not leaking. Question is whether it's best to replace with a hard factory line, or go to something a little more stout, like braided SS or something similar. This is an '86 street/DE car, running the stock fender oil cooler and no internal engine mods. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Dan J. |

I highly recommend you check out Elephant Racings finned oil lines. Since you run DE's they will give some extra cooling. I have some and they are very high quality.
Chuck Moreland created, owns, runs Elephant and has some of the most informative posts on this board. When he first developed them he had a great post on this board which I can't find because the search only goes back 1 year. (If anyone has that link it should be moved to a tech article). Their website is here: http://www.elephantracing.com Our host also carries them here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_ENGoil_pg3.htm#item13 Good luck.

Being in Florida I am looking for ANY additional cooling I can get. I ordered these lines from Pelican and expect to see them later this week. I really like the schrader valve on the line so you can purge the oil coolers during an oil change.
Although I do not have any experiance with them yet I can say they seem to be very highly regarded here, hence my decision to make the purchase.

Braided lines reduce cooling capacity. The Elephant lines increase it.

I was thinking about using the Elephant lines to increase cooling...how much heat do they absorb? Would using them on only the return line help? Do they hurt the engine in cold weather by not allowing the engine to heat up?

Thanks for the input on the lines.
I would only think that the additional fins would aid in cooling the oil. There's a thermostat upstream of this part of the system that doesn't start circulation in to the forward cooling system until a certain temp...so overcooling isn't an issue. Again, thanks for the input everyone... Dan. |
